    Retirement

After 21 years in the Army National Guard, I have decided to retire. Over the past few days I’ve had four different SGMs and CSMs call me and try and talk me out of it. I’m currently enrolled in phase two of the non-resident Sergeant Major Academy, but I simply am ready to be done with it all.

As I posted in another thread, I had a company refuse to hire me simply because I was still in the guard, and I got the sense that it was the case from two other companies I interviewed with. Further, being at Division where half the company out ranked the commander and I, and having a toxic company commander didn’t help either. Finally, how the withdrawal from Afghanistan was handled led me to lose all confidence, faith, and trust in the military and civilian leadership. My CSM asked me if getting me out of division and on a deployment would help keep me in, I told him that with the way things are, I don’t trust the Feds to deploy me to Nevada without it going sideways.

Initial paperwork has been filled out and signed, gear turn in scheduled for next month. There’s a ton of things that I had wanted to do before retiring, but with everything going on, getting out now far outweighs not doing those things. Plus side is my wife fully supports my decision and has been a huge help through this.

I don’t know if I mentioned it elsewhere but one of the best SFCs I’ve ever worked with is in the same boat for many GI the same reasons. He would’ve pinned 8 and taken my company in the next month or two.

I know that North of you people are dropping packets at an increased rate. I’ve still got four years left but my 20 year letter while not even have time to settle before my retirement packet goes out the door. I’m so done with the Army, unfortunately I’m just not at 20.

It's amazing how much sway a President has on military service.

I remember guys who were close to the end and ready to be done under Carter who decided to stay long because of Reagan. I know guys who joined because of Reagan and the "new" military culture who made it through Bush 41 and got out early because of Clinton.

I don't care if it's fast food or military, if you have a good crew chief who rewards good people and makes them feel valued...you get long term crews. If you have a bad crew chief, the people who are talented know they will be valued elsewhere.

You would think government, and especially the military would understand this basic premise, but you'd find out you are wrong far too often. And it isn't the median range pay for putting yourself in harms way that discourages people, it's shit like "thinking" you are part of something that actually respects honor, duty, integrity and all those other words they drum in your head so you put your ass out in the wind trying to help, trying to help people, trying to make things better. You do this knowing that the promises made to the people who are assisting you will be honored. And then suddenly with no real warning the mission is no longer the mission and previous arrangements are no longer honored.

And for each guy on the ground, the locals who worked with YOU....who trusted YOU...because YOU believed in everyone are not only left behind but as a result YOU feel like it's partly or mostly your fault. I wouldn't put up with that shit in Burger King, I certainly wouldn't do it for a job that demands I put my life on the line every day.

We can't fix the people we failed to get out of Vietnam, despite the fact we were given almost 3 years to do so but Ford didn't seem to make it a priority. Looks like the door is pretty much closed on getting friendlies out of Astan and any people we did evac would probably turn out to be sleepers.

Trump had a plan to get out people out and those who helped us out in a orderly and structured fashion, but it seems like their fates were secondary to making sure Trump didn't get to sign the home run ball.

And that makes all those people shit birds. I wasn't a fan of Obama, but IF he started the orderly evacuation of US forces and our allies during his tenure as President not only would I have never wanted to see it undermined, I'd have forever given him credit to getting it done correctly. I'd still have many other criticisms, but at least he would have done that one correctly.

No President is more important than taking care of our people who work in harms way to protect this country and the security of this country. Presidents are expendable...we can get a new one every four years. People willing to go bad places full of bad people and hold the line, yeah we can't always get an unlimited supply of those.

Ironically most people in uniform do not see it that way, they see only their Commander in Chief regardless of what party he came from and it doesn't take away from their service, which is all the more impressive to me. I couldn't do it.

Best of luck in your next steps rero360. Know that there are plenty of companies that LOVE to hire vets (and current guard/reserve). Purely for "selfish" reasons... they know they are getting the best men and women the world has to offer .

    Rero360;
I remember the day I retired, stepped out the door and had a big sigh of relief and a bit of anxity.
I taught HS for three months watched the towers fall from my classroom and left it immeaditaly to go in to Military Contracting. 14+ years later I retired again with a mix of disgust and anger.
I dunno, I'm not angry about my service, I'm just disappointed in the jack asses running the show now.

    Good Luck.

How does a NG retirement work? Don't you have to wait until you're like 59 or 60 to start collecting it? The amount you receive will not be the same as an E-whatever with 21 years of AD would get, correct?

A coworker of mine said he retired as a SEAL in the reserves after 22 years but can't draw retirement until 58? That sucks. David

Correct, I don’t start collecting until I’m 60 and it will be less than someone who was AD as it goes by points and not so much years. In the guard you get 15 points for just existing, and then two points for every day you attend drill and one point for every day you are on orders like Annual Training or a deployment. I came out with right around 3,600 points.
