My Pre NAFTA 1991 Zenith Senty 2 TV Finally Gave Up The Ghost...

Amazing how long things last when they are NOT made in Mexico.

Just a run of the mill 26" $200 TV that I bought about 23 years ago and even with the regular power surges it's endured from regular temporary blackouts (FPL sucks if you live in an older development in FL) that caused havoc with the picture tube it ran 8 hours daily with the news in the background next to my computer.

Only the screen size relegated it to an office computer. In that 23 years I have bought countless TVs that lasted on average about 8 years. Thanks to Bill Clinton pretty much all electronics are disposable crap that won't last a decade and aren't even worth repairing when they go tits up. Just another way he made life pretty much suck a little bit more for every American and in a way that will never be corrected. At least his plan to give Mexicans jobs in Mexico has helped with the burden of illegal immigration as he claimed it would...except of course that never really changed anything much except cars and electronics made in Mexico are a bigger piece of crap than the worst US made brands from 20 years ago.

Tonight when I turned it on to check a couple DVDs to verify they are error free I got a pop, some sparks and a puff of smoke. But I have no complaints. Reminded me of the time when I was a kid and my fathers TV died a similar death and I believe it had a similar twenty something lifespan. But that too was a Made in the US product when such a thing meant something and people didn't expect to replace their electronics every 5 years.

Thankfully I have a flat screen monitor that has been sitting dormant waiting for a use. I wonder how much time I'll get out of that.

Whoa, I heard Zenith and had a flash back of their lighting bolt logo.

So now the only question is which happy switch equipped implement you will utilize to give it a proper send-off?

With ammo prices, I'll probably just set it out on the curb for Monday pickup.

I still have the first color TV my parents bought back in the early 90s. It's a Tri-Star (Mitsubishi) actually made in Japan. It's in my basement, hooked up to a digital-analog converter and a short-range HD TV antenna. Still works like a charm.

It probably will, however, Steyr is also quite right...There was a time, (I'm 59, I still remember) when one bought a TV, chances were, A. it was made in the U.S. B. you had every expectation that it would last at least 10-15 yrs, and if/when it broke you'd call the TV repairman who would come to your door and fix it right in your living room. I remember when my father bought the first "color TV" after watching black and white, color was a lightyear ahead...This was in 1968....

Gotcha beat - I remember our first TV in the 50's, a huge console with a tiny B&W screen. Before that, the family listened to radio shows in the evenings after dinner - "Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men? The Shadow knows!"

Refrigerators seem to be the worst now. I have a 20 year old washer and dryer that are still going strong. And my 5 year old 46" Sony Bravia flat panel TV operates and looks like new. Hope I didn't jinx them.

My mother still has 2 floor model tube tvs from the early 80s that are going strong. One RCA and one Zenith. The RCA brand has some beautiful wood that whenever it dies, if it ever will, I said I want it and will take out the tube and mount a flat screen to it.
