Hell I remember this being done 20 years ago. Also realistic looking 1:1 metal toy guns with moving slides and removable magazines have been around at least since the mid 70s. I had a 1911 that you couldn't tell from the real thing unless you opened it and checked the chamber or looked down the barrel.

So we have to employ a little "walks like a duck" common sense. If a given person looks like a dangerous gang banger type, even if the gun is blaze orange it is probably safest to assume they are a genuine threat. And even if the gun is an airsoft, that doesn't mean they aren't actual criminals. Lots of broke gangbanger types commit crimes with BB guns, airsoft guns or other realistic looking non guns, but they are real criminals.

By the same token, if it looks like a typical suburban kid, the MP5 probably isn't real no matter how authentic it may look.

So you really can't "trust the object" to ID the good from the bad. You really do have to evaluate the person holding the object to the best of your ability in the time they are willing to afford you to make an evaluation regarding if they are presenting a credible threat or not.

Those who live in high crime areas are obviously going to be at greater risk if they play army with a starter pistol or think pointing their replica handgun at the police is a great prank and they can't get hurt because it isn't real.

And when it comes to criminal making threats, I don't really care what they are pointing at me or what color it is, I'm assuming they are the real deal and will treat them accordingly.
