Nice to see big Army catching up to SOCOM, only took about 10 years. Full auto is much preferred to burst due to the consistent trigger pull on the FA. Now if they only wrapped up the free float rail into this, rather than having to rework all the "new" M4A1's later for that solicitation it would have been a home run. Reminds me of the SOPMOD days a decade or more ago.....the wheels turn ever so slowly.

Considering they aren't the first big Army unit to get M4A1's, yea. Typical Army Times nonsense half reporting.

I don't call it a "classic garbage line" because we aren't talking about a company known to produce garbage like some of the others who make those claims. Even the Mod 5 would be a better option than the standard charging handle. It's not just about the latch size, it's also the fact that the latch was redesigned.

BCM sells a neat charging handle, but LOTS if people opt to remove larger latches after a few patrols/TICs after the larger latch pulls their gun out of battery.

The move is a smart one on the part of the Army. Hardly anyone ever uses any mode of fire other than SEMI. As mentioned, BURST equipped guns have horrendous trigger pulls. Going to AUTO makes sense if for no other reason than that benefit. No one wants extra weight, but at least the SOCOM profile barrel is a step in right direction as it is not backwards like the Gov't profile is.

If you're having a problem with extended latches get the smaller ones. My BCM handle doesn't have the huge latch but I still find it much easier to operate than my work 6920 doing one handed manipulations.

The HBAR is back. For the extra tenth of a pound less cook-offs would seem to be a fair trade if it holds up in court.

Why would they adopt a longer barrel?

Velocity difference between 14.5 and 16" is negligible.
Like I previously said, they won't. Just talking about the fragmentation range. 150 meters compared to 90....(reliably is a different story) As we all know, the SS109 struggles, and needs all the velocity it can get.

"The military should use what I use" is silly.
You are right, it is silly, and I didn't say that at all. I didn't even imply it. Just stating a thought. If they were to go to the 16 (which they won't), then a mid-length is the better choice.

I thought we don't use the M855 any more? Marines went to the Mk316 and Army went to the M855A1.

They could cheaply make these superior units with a good charging handle, ambi safety, and RIS-II FSP units instead of boat anchor barrels. The Mod5 doesn't add any interference, and is outright superior. A 12" handguard, FSP model is a simple enough addition, and comparatively cheap.

Army still primarily uses M855, as does the Marine Corps. Mk318 is still somewhat plentiful, but not getting used that much, and despite how much better that is than the M855 line offerings, they're still going to be replaced by M855A1 (derp). So, the DoD is still finding ways to spend more money on worse results.

That is my understanding as well.
