Big shout-out to Rolling Thunder Security and Medical Staff

My family and I salute the professionalism and generous help of the 2014 Rolling Thunder Security and Medical Team. We learned first-hand how dedicated they are to their jobs and how well they perform them.

On May 24, the team members helped me and my grandson after we were involved in a hit and run accident outside the National Air and Space Museum. I was returning my 7-year-old grandson from a tour of the National Mall to a designated spot in front of the museum on Jefferson Street. It is a one-way street with buses lined up on the right side of the road, and cars and motorcycles lined up on the left. Vehicles crawl through the area.

I was stopped in traffic with my left foot on the ground and the bike balanced beneath me when the car behind me pushed me forward (maybe the driver took his foot off his brake) and caused my left foot to roll under the passenger leg rest. I screamed at the top of my lungs in unbelievable pain. The Cruiser never went down. The bike was being held up by my mangled ankle. Within a few minutes, onlookers removed me and my grandson from the bike.

Team members were on the scene almost immediately and helped me to a nearby park bench, laid me prone, removed my boot and sock, applied a splint with ice and called 911 (I assume so anyway because the U.S. Park Police and a DC ambulance arrived). The security staff sat with my four grandchildren, ages 5-9, while my son-in-law retrieved my wallet, owner's card and insurance information from the bike saddle bag.

One of the staff members got permission from the U.S. Park Police to move my Cruiser to the grassy section of the Mall, out of harms way. The staff member locked the bike and returned the key fob to my son-in-law. The cabbie who hit me popped smoke while all of this was going on. The accident was filed as a hit and run.

My ankle is broken in two places and I will have to wait until later this week to make an appointment with the surgeon. I'm just laying around the house in pain with little help from the pain meds but a lot of time to think of the good people who helped me. My family and I are incredibly grateful.

Good luck with your recovery, and good luck with tracking down the hit and run driver.

    Good morning

Surgery was yesterday and received a plate and screws in left ankle.

Certainly has been a learning experience:

Surgery was in a SurgCenter, don't know if it is only common to Maryland but a really great idea. Outpatient surgery performed in a SurgCenter offices located within a bland looking office building. The one I was in had 7 beds. staging and operating room. Certainly cuts down on the cost of a hospital operating and recover rooms.

My friend who is Assistant Chief of one of the local aganecies, informed me that the traffic cameras are only shared with fatality cases. Therefore assWipe is good-to-go.

In Maryland not all Orthopedic Doctors will handle hit-n-run cases (of course we never knew this fact): for example, I have AllState and they will pay my medical expenses of course up to my max. Now in three months, assWipe is caught and he has State Farm, so AllState will sue State Farm for their expenses. Now State Farm will depose the doctors and question them on the level of service etc., the doctors end up on hot seat. and more importantly lose monies. It is all about monies.

Time to return and elevate the left foot.

    OUT

Dude, there is nothing I despise more than a hit and run driver. When I say there is nothing I despise more than a hit and run driver, I really mean it. I'd take a Hillary POTUS for 8 years if it meant I could literally beat the shit out of a hit and run driver and upload the pics of his mangled body to his (or her, I don't care) own Facebook for the world to see. But then again, if they caught the guy he'd only get a $166 careless driving ticket anyway.

Sorry to hear about your troubles. Fortunately your grandson was not injured and your bike didn't hit the ground!

There are cameras there, specifically trained on that lane. It may be too long elapsed, so their tapes may have been overwritten, but you should ask a lawyer to try and get them.

Depends on where you are. Here in Az hit and run is a criminal case. I believe (not completely sure on it) that leaving the scene with a serious injury bumps it up to a felony.
