The judge, Kathleen Watanabe, ruled that the punishment was “old-fashioned” and inappropriate. She said that it is dangerous for children to walk alongside the road due to potential pedophiles. It was a form of punishment no longer supported by the community.

WOW. I can only assume the age wasn't reased because the kid was ten. Had he been five that would have been a lead point.

Holy shit. If that judge did THAT to that father, my mother would have been sentenced to death for some of the punishments I received.

Or, have they always existed in more or less the same percentage as now, but parents were so cruel in the past they made their children walk a gauntlet of them?
Of course not.
As a kid, I walked to school (I went to a lot of different schools) rain or shine and for a lot farther than 1 piddly mile...and so did the majority of kids.
My opinion: There's no more or less evil than ever existed, but there's significant more awareness of it.

When I walked home from school, I knew my way home! which streets to avoid and which streets had the barking dogs...

Maybe if the "justice system" didn't have registered sex offender living in nearly every community this wouldn't be a problem.
