    MEGA .308/7.62 Build

I finally rounded up all the parts that I needed to complete this build. I already have more than a few 5.56 rifles so I wanted to build a 7.62 rifle. I was thinking of getting a Larue as I have shot them a good number of times but did not want to wait a year or so and besides building your own is more fun. I did not know it at first but I found out that I was able to use all 5.56 parts on the lower except for the take down pins and bolt catch which is a real nice feature(which came installed anyway). I took it to the range just to do a functions check on it and had no issues. I stripped and re-painted the scope with Dura Coat so once it cures up I will post on how she groups.

    Nice!

Can't wait to hear how she shoots! I have been wanting to finish a very similar build for a long time now.

That is some serious hardware. What loads are you going to try through it?

Put the scope on her later this afternoon, wanted to go to the range but it decided to rain all day and night.

I went to the range yesterday to tune the gas block (waiting on a different set of scope rings to zero then I will post how she groups). I turned the set screw all the way in and back 2 turns, shot and bolt still cycles. I turned the set screw all the way in and she still cycles. I was under the impression that with the set screw all the way in I would be closing all the gas off. Is this correct? She shoots real soft but makes me wonder if I got a bad gas block. Unless I am turning the set screw the wrong way but I am fairly certain that is not the case.

Can't say I know enough about the JP gas block to answer your question, but I was also under the impression that totally tight meant totally closed. Maybe they have a different system for minimal through excessive gas flow. If it shoots soft, I don't see a reason to be concerned.

Out of curiosity, you mentioned waiting for new rings. Do you not like the Larue that you're using, or was that just a temporary mount while you waited for another? Whenever I finish my 308 project (which may actually happen in a few months, if the manufacturer finally gets their upper receivers back on the market), I was planning on not going the QD route and using an AADMmount, as it has a built in 20 MOA and beefy lugs.

I am not too concerned since it does shoot soft, just wondering if anybody had experience with them. The Larue mount is nice but how the mount is set back I can not move it any further to the rear to get the eye relief that I want. I am going to use it on the SPR that I built awhile back. I ordered a set of Badger Ord. rings that do not have the QD link. UPS delivered them today so I am going to head to the range sometime this week to zero.
