    Gun Rack, Vehicle, Locking

Any of you hillbillies got a gun rack in your vehicle?

I'd like an overhead rack, with the ability to lock it.

If you've got one, show it off.

No pics but a company called Black Rack, makes some good stuff. I don't remember if they have a model that goes above or if they just concentrate on middle seat racks. If you go with one that sits up above your head prepare for losing your rear view mirror. Can't see a darn thing out the back with some of the systems.

I would like to find a sleeve or case that is hidden and hangs behind the backseat in my 2012 F-150 crewcab. Most people don't even know the backseat folds down, much less that a rifle would be back there. I might have to just fab something up.

It's a pain to fold down. It's a good hiding place but you'll have to figure out a quick and easy way to get it down. Let me know when you do.

If you live in a more rural area a rack is fine, but if you venture to urban areas I would recommend a DIY under seat setup if you have a crew or extended cab.

Its a bad idea to ever have a "EXPOSED" firearm in a vehicle, its just another reason for someone to break a window in a theft attempt.
We are all inclined to judge ourselves by our ideals; others, by their acts.

Done. I did this as soon as I got the truck. It was a real pain in the a$$ to drop the first time, but it's down with a quick tug now. I made the cable long enough so it sits just below the back of the rear seat (~.5"). You can't see it even if you look for it, but it's very quick and easy to grab with your finger. Green was the only color cable I could find in the size I wanted... I tried a zip tie, but it was too bulky to fit through the latch and have it still function. Plus I wanted something a little more reliable. This is what I ended up with:

I don't really remember, but I think I had to either drill or enlarge the hole in the top of the bracket as well as the hole where the cable and spring attach. If you want more info, I can take more pictures.

Edit: I think this is where I found the most info, but mine was a bit different. If you understand how the latch works, you shouldn't have a problem fabbing something up. The picture above is the only way I could make it work on my truck.

Looks good. I'll have to try something like that. Having a carbine sorta hid away in the truck would be nice.

This discussion came up again today in the, "ISIS Is Going to Kill Us All" thread.

I'm bumping this with specific questions, geared towards LEO.

Since the hillbilly method I've used is working, but less than ideal, I'm shopping for some of the LEO-Specific vehicle racks (Santa Cruz, Blue Sky, etc.).

I'm looking at the electronic models, specifically, but not necessarily for the intended use of wiring it in.

Most of the LEO racks, while less covert, offer what I perceive to be superior security.

Are there any things to look out for? Any issues with aftermarket Picatinny rails, etc? Any conflicts with VLTOR A5 equipped setups?

Are any of the systems you're using compatible with both A2-style Rifles AND M4 Style Carbines? Any issues with shorties?

These things are NOT cheap, and I'd like to make an informed decision before I drop coin on a dedicated/integrated system.

Right now I'm leaning heavily towards the ELS 270A from Big Sky:
