I'll agree that SSRIs are likely over-prescribed in the US.


You're probably referring to "articles" linking the two. There seems to be some evidence that SSRIs may cause violence in some individuals. However, this is a very small percentage.


Most negative reactions are due to the abrupt cessation of treatment, or over-prescription by the physician.


Furthermore, there are literally millions of people suffering from depression who greatly benefit from SSRIs.


Blaming these whackos on the medication is just silly.


P.S. There are lethal effects that appear with toxicity of every medication.

You are definitely onto something there. There are occasions when a child needs anti-anxiety drugs, but in a lot of instances the drugs are used as a substitute for parenting skills.

For the medical professionals on this thread, is there documentation of the percentage of people who were involved in school shootings that were on meds?

We have people with mental illness that are on SSRIs. These people are at a higher risk for suicide. A number of them use guns as their method to end it.

My theory is that a small percentage of them, before committing suicide, go out and kill others first.

These mass shooters, are not a result of the guns or the SSRIs, they are a failure of our mental health system.

You can blame guns and/or SSRIs, but they are just small parts of the problem.

That's a cum hoc fallacy; automatic assumption that because there are two corresponding statistics that one MUST be the cause of the other: Most of the school shooters were on SSRIs, therefore, SSRIs cause school shootings. We shouldn't confuse coincidence with causation.

It doesn't take a lot of figuring to conclude arbitrarily pumping kids full of powerful mind altering meds from elementary school on isn't going to be good for them. They should be the absolute last resort instead of the first because the idiot parents or .gov workers at school didn't know how to deal with them. Every kid I personally know of on them needed more intelligent parents before needing meds.
