Too much optic? Optic choice for BCM hammer forged lightweight barrel.

My question is: Is the Vortex Viper PST 2.5-10x32 too much optic for a BCM 16" lightweight profile (chrome-lined, hammer forged) barrel??

I am debating between the 2.5-10x32 and the 1-4x24 in the Viper PST line.
As this isn't a stainless steel barrel, and it's a lightweight profile, this wouldn't be a all-out precision carbine, but I am hoping to squeeze out as much precision as I can while keeping it light and usable for general purpose use.

For those with experience with this barrel (or ones very similar to it) and these optics, I am interested to hear your thoughts/advice.

Nah, I know of folks hitting steel at 1,000 yards with 14.5" CL barrels. "Too much" anything is subjective.

What did you hope to accomplish with the LW barrel? Don't buy an optic that'll ruin what you're trying to accomplish.

A scope doesn't make your gun more accurate. What size targets are you shooting, at what range and under what conditions? Be aware that either of those scopes with a mount will weigh a pound an a half. GH

Totally depends on what you want the gun to do.

I went from a 1-4 to a 1-8 and discovered that the 1-8is too much for what I want, a 1-6 may be the best optiob for me. For you it may not be. Figure out the application then the optics.

We've done just that with a 2.5-10 NF.

As stated... depends what you want to do.

I like to use a platform to its full potential. LW rifles are easier to maneuver, SS barrels shoot more accurately. My optic choices reflect this.

Bingo. Why did you go the LW route instead of a std contour?

Mostly because I wanted a light handy general purpose carbine.

See above. Thinking about it, I am leaning towards the 2.5-10x32, as the 1-4x24 weighs pretty much the same, so not much weight savings to be had there.

I am mainly eyeing the higher magnification of the 2.5-10 for target id. Range would be, ideally up to 1000 (it will take lots of work obviously), but in most cases 500 metres at most, as I only have access to the 1000 yd range sporadically.

Thanks for the input. I am almost 100% decided on the 2.5-10. Now the hunt for a low price/sale/promotion begins.
