    Fecal Transplants Anyone?

As crazy as it sounds, if you have not heard of it, fecal transplant could save thousands of lives. It may have a high yuck factor, but no side effects and very high success rate curing C-diff and possibly other infections.

FYI: My father has been in the hospital for months due to a C dif infection. I have suggested this therapy to his docs several times, and the suggestion was ignored, in favor of high doses of anti biotics which have ruined his health only slightly less than the C dif infection. At 90, he has little metabolic reserves for such assaults.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Imagine a low-cost treatment for a life-threatening infection that could cure up to 90 percent of patients with minimal side effects, often in a few days.

It may sound like a miracle drug, but this cutting-edge treatment is profoundly simple — though somewhat icky: take the stool of healthy patients to cure those with hard-to-treat intestinal infections. A small but growing number of physicians have begun using these so-called fecal transplants to treat Clostridium difficile, commonly referred to as C-diff, a bacterial infection that causes nausea, cramping and diarrhea. The germ afflicts a half-million Americans annually and kills about 15,000 of them.

But fecal transplants pose a challenge for the Food and Drug Administration, which has decided to regulate the treatment as an experimental drug. Stool transplants don't fit neatly into the agency's standard framework. And while regulators have shown flexibility in their approach, some critics say the mere presence of government oversight is discouraging many doctors from offering transplants. That's led some patients to seek out questionable "do-it-yourself" websites, forums and videos.

Most researchers agree that the FDA's concerns are warranted. Patients can contract HIV, hepatitis and other viruses and parasites from fecal matter that is not properly screened. Additionally, there are no long-term studies on potential side effects of stool transplantation.

FDA officials declined to be interviewed for this story, but said in a written response that the fecal transplantation "shows promise in treating C. difficile infection that has not been responsive to other therapies."

Indeed, with many patients no longer responding to potent antibiotics, fecal transplants have emerged as an effective therapy against drug-resistant strains of the C-diff superbug. The procedure works because the healthy bacteria found in donors' feces can help fight off foreign infections.

"We're dealing with something that is pretty close to miraculous," says Dr. Lawrence Brandt of New York's Montefiore Medical Center, who has performed over 200 fecal transplants.

I was 100% sure this was somehow going to be in reference to the facial orifices of members of the current administration.

I have a hard time believing this is real. Are you sure the original source isn't "The Onion" or something?

It's legit and has been known for a long time in fact. I have known about the practice for years. It was strictly an "alternative" med practice that was found to be quite effective, and has been adopted (not enough in my view) by main stream med circles more recently. It makes perfect sense if you think about it. Via PubMed:

    Abstract

    PURPOSE OF REVIEW:

Fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) re-establishes a balanced intestinal flora with resultant cure of recurrent Clostridium difficile infection (RCDI). FMT has also been used to treat other gastrointestinal (GI) diseases including inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), and chronic constipation and a variety of non-GI disorders. The purpose of this review is to discuss the intestinal microbiota and FMT treatment of GI and non-GI diseases.

    RECENT FINDINGS:

It is known that an imbalanced intestinal microbiota predisposes to CDI, IBD and IBS. The complex role of intestinal microbiota to maintain health, however, is a newer concept that is being increasingly studied. The microbiome plays an important role in cellular immunity and energy metabolism and has been implicated in the pathogenesis of non-GI autoimmune diseases, chronic fatigue syndrome, obesity and even some neuropsychiatric disorders.

    SUMMARY:

FMT is a highly effective cure for RCDI, but increased knowledge of the intestinal microbiota in health maintenance, as well as controlled trials of FMT in a wide range of disorders are needed before FMT can be accepted and applied clinically.

    Abstract

There has been growing interest in the use of fecal microbiota for the treatment of patients with chronic gastrointestinal infections and inflammatory bowel diseases. Lately, there has also been interest in its therapeutic potential for cardiometabolic, autoimmune, and other extraintestinal conditions that were not previously considered to be associated with the intestinal microbiota. Although it is not clear if changes in the microbiota cause these conditions, we review the most current and best methods for performing fecal microbiota transplantation and summarize clinical observations that have implicated the intestinal microbiota in various diseases. We also discuss case reports of fecal microbiota transplantations for different disorders, including Clostridium difficile infection, irritable bowel syndrome, inflammatory bowel diseases, insulin resistance, multiple sclerosis, and idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura. There has been increasing focus on the interaction between the intestinal microbiome, obesity, and cardiometabolic diseases, and we explore these relationships and the potential roles of different microbial strains. We might someday be able to mine for intestinal bacterial strains that can be used in the diagnosis or treatment of these diseases.

Completely legit AND it can be very beneficial in certain cases.

Have you ever seen a mother deer lick her ass and then lick her fawns ass? Same exact principle. Has been known to occur in nature in many species; just a diff. transmission vector.

ive also read about this, something about healthy enzymes getting transfered from healthy intestines to unhealthy actually curing ailments... sounds crazy but i guess its for real.

Assuming we're on the same page, not enzymes, but bacteria. We are completely dependent on bacteria to survive.

It has a high yuk factor to be sure, but it's not like they put it in a blender and make a smoothie for you to drink. No side effects, non toxic, may treat some infections that kill thousands: I'll take it.
