For a semi light-weight farm rifle that will take a lickin and keep on tickin, this is sure tough to beat. Plus at it's price point you can buy a real nice optic. JMHO

^I like the Accupoint TR24R, that would be a good scope for a ranch rifle. Fast on target 1-4X, illuminated, needs no batteries and reasonably rugged.

If he's looking at cataract surgery things are about to change greatly. I had completely lost the ability to shoot irons before my surgery, afterwards it's back. The post-surgery recovery period will be more about "eye strain from focus time". I had migrated everything to traditional glass prior to surgery, but found it straining afterwards for the first year or so. I moved to 0X red dots for a while before embracing all three now (glass-red dot-irons). Just saying..

would 1'oclock irons with a variable glass optic be better? therefore if he gets his vision back he can use the irons but still has the variable optics for farther out.

Thanks for the advice, might just leave irons on for a bit.

I would love one of these but I think it's going to be over my price range with the mount. What would be the next comparable in the $500 price range?

    The search is over!

I decided to go with the following:

    BCM RECCE-16 KMR Precision MK2
Trijicon TR24G in a BoBro extra extended mount
    InForce WML with I/R setting

    Total: $2,170

A little over budget, but I think I did pretty well considering what I got. I'm very excited to get everything in and give this bad boy to my dad. I know he is going to love it.

Thank you to everyone who gave suggestions (including the ludicrous "coach with an acog").

Special thanks to zx2man for the smokin' deal on the TR24, and Mr. Greene for the smokin' deal on the Inforce WML.

Looks like a good setup. Only bad thing is that WML lacks momentary. I bought one not realizing that and HATE it.
