What Skintop said. Wasn't it Boston with the pictures of the Eotech on backwards?
If I were a cop I would want a MK18. Plenty small and tested by many with a manual most people know.

Upstate New York, actually, but yes. I'd rather have updated training vs a new toy, so long as whatever long gun I had previously was workable.
I haven't had a big problem with a full size gun up front, but an SBR would be nice for many reasons. Not sure if they're available to this department or other NJ LEAs, though. If I could, I'd carry my SBR. Not an option, yet.
My guess is that it's likely a combination of:
-Overall compactness. Not an unreasonable argument
-"Special snowflake" syndrome
-Someone in a position of leverage suddenly getting the bug for something new. See above
-IWI may have offered a pretty sweet deal for the guns as well.
The advice above is worth exactly what you paid for it.
Meh, variety is the spice of life. I mean, they could have gone with Bushmaster like another poster pointed out. As a minimum, the Tavor is doing pretty darn good from all accounts and I doubt the PD will get lemons since IWI is trying to break into the US market more.
Experience is a cruel teacher, gives the exam first and then the lesson.
Meh, its NJ. We all know gun laws and politicians there know what they're doing.
I think the Tavor is a cool gun being a bull-pup, but I cannot see how its more advantageous than a basic M4 carbine like a Colt or BCM other than a shorter OAL. If my dept had money, I'd rather get a HK G36C or 416..
Speculation: The Tavor also has more "what's that?" to it than "evil assault rifle!"

If I were a cop and I wanted an SBR, I would want a can. And if I'm running a can on an SBR, I'm going to want a piston. So I'd skip the Mk18 for an SBR'd HK416 or SCAR. And either of those options is more expensive than the Tavor, even before the can. And once you've got the can, you're back to the same OAL as a 14.5" barreled gun anyway. I'd probably pick the SCAR of the two, due to the folding stock.
The only thing I can imagine that might be worse in a PD than trying to get a good AR rather than a crap one, is going to be getting SBR-specific ammo versus Wal-Mart specials or M193/M855.

Lakewood has a large Jewish population, I'm calling it early:

It's possible Lakewood PD was given a terrific deal, so IWI U.S. can get their foot in the door for PD contracts.
