Thoughts on Trij Acog/Which model to buy

Hey gang, its about time to scope an AR thats been sitting in the safe. I almost always come to this site to ask thoughts and opinions about what to go with and what other folks who have went down the same path have bought. I have a 16" AR carbine that is ready to be scoped. I would like to get an Acog for it but, there are so many models out there I am not sure what to start looking into. When I look at the Trij Acogs, it seems like they are all 4X with reticule being the major difference. Can anyone give me a a few options or thoughts on what model I would want to look at for an AR15? I am not sure if this is to broad of a statement? If there is more information that you all need... let me know and I can provide it. Just looking to make the smartest and best choice!

    Thanks

Most go with 1-4 or 1-6 variables with true x1 these days if wanting magnification or an aimpoint.

+1. Acogs are fairly dated now and their eye relief is quite bad.

I just bought a ta31 rsr-r. I really like it. I bought it because it had a lot of nice features and I was able to find that model at a great price ($900). It is a 4x model in FDE. It has the red horseshoe reticle. It has the bosses for an RMR, has the lanyards for the adjustment caps, and the external adjustment knobs. I like the horseshoe. It seems to have the right balance of speed and accuracy for me.

I've had a few ACOGs, and I love my TA31RCO and the carbine set up for it for what it is. Buy the TR24T if you can - cost is similar, and unless you're actually shooting beyond 300m and using the BDC marked portion of the reticle the 1-4x is better in every single way.

I like the Horseshoe reticle the best (generally in green). Why? It is fast and since I shoot a lot of RDS's, I like that it has a simple dot in the center for more precise work.

Like everything else, it is is really personal preference.

We have lots of ACOG's and VCOG's in stock and offer member discounts on Trijicon products. So drop us a line for pricing a specific model you are interested in.

I don't know about all this eye relief crap. They make adjustable stocks these days, and mounts allow you to move the optic to where you want.

We run a few models. I can work with any of them I suppose. I kind of like the plain old cross hair reticle. The chevron kind of occludes the target when you just start to enter the 200 yard range.

Anything that keeps the bullet drop compensation marks clearest is my preference, but I can work around an overly busy reticle too.

Says who? I don't know of many variable optics under $3K that are even half as rugged as an ACOG (and until tens of thousands of VCOGs see a decade of war the jury will still be out on them).

What about closer ranges? Seems like both eyes open shooting would be PITA. I have never used an ACOG that's why I'm asking. I looked through a 3X at a LGS, glass was great lots of light and I liked the reticle, but I couldn't reconcile how I would use it within 50 yards without adding an RMR.

I personally like having more eye relief. And some of the ACOGs are specifically noted as being good for BAC (basically both eyes open shooting). I assume they would have a larger reticle and longer eye relief.

This question probably seems non-sense to you, but I'm looking for answers from someone who has extensive experience with them.
