Good on you. My aunt is a realtor in Dallas specializing in higher end homes and she won't do business with Citi anymore either after I told her of my horror stories.

Very, very true. The only one worse in my experience is Bank of America.

BofA used to be a great bank to work with. They shut down their mortgage business except for the retail branches in the early 2000's. However, when the melt down hit in 09 they were basically forced to buy Countrywide. Unfortunately what BofA did was just change the name and branding of Countrywide and keep the staff and processes in place. Huge mistake. You still had the same mentality from the old Countrywide side with a new name. So nothing really changed but the name. The bad thing about that whole deal is that the Govt. forced BofA to buy Countrywide and the Govt. still came after BofA for all of CW's transgressions. Kind of like the Govt. saying "Do us a big huge favor and bail us out by buying CW but then be prepared to bend over and take a big huge one up the behind!!"

Wow! Some of the responses are very informative and I wish I'd talked to a few of you before I started the process. I really appreciate the insight and wisdom.

USAA finally came through this afternoon and everything is in order. They screwed up a few numbers so I'm getting a lot more cash back from closing than I'd originally expected. The seller has also made some surprise repairs and upgrades to the home, (some new appliances and repairs we didn't ask for)

I'm finally breathing a sigh of relief, and it looks like everything is indeed going to work out.

Again, thank you for the responses. I do sincerely appreciate it.

Congrats on the house purchase. Now to rain on the parade... start stacking the cash for repairs. Seems like everything will break at about the same time.

I used them this last time and was very pleased. Luck of the draw, perhaps.

Lenders almost always overstate expected numbers on the Good Faith estimate they give you. Better to tell you that you need to bring 12,000 to closing and then you only need 9,000 than the other way around. Congrats on your new home. I know that as a Realtor the best moment of a day when when a person signs the last page and gets the keys

USAA is crap now. Even on the banking side. We are looking at the options for local credit unions. USAA turned off my deposit by mobile function because I don't have a credit card or insurance. Their UPS store deposit is shitty. Half the time I can't deposit because the system is down or the scanner isn't working. They started structuring deposits and withdrawals to generate ach fees. They held a paycheck of mine for 14 business days for no reason.

If I can tomorrow I'll be opening an account with a local credit union with around 1k to deposit and forget usaa.

Eta: they also stopped my rewards checking account. Used to get several hundred back a year. Now nothing. Our local CU has way better rewards now.

I bank at a local credit union and wouldn't go elsewhere. Local Credit Unions are basically small town banks and still do a lot of relationship style banking. We provide all of the mortgage services for the local CU I bank with and the things they do for their members is unbelievable sometimes.
