    Adding a cannelure.

    Hello.

I've been kicking around the idea of picking up some 77gr SMK and trying my luck with a hand cannelure tool. Anyone that has picked up a w/cannelure SMK clearly see's that it isn't sporting a deep military cannelure.
Anyone else give this a shot?

Also, just for giggles I am considering doing the same thing to some light-jacketed .308 match rounds, and see if I can replicate the old W. German ammo.

    Any thoughts/experience would be great.

    My question would be why?

Use a Lee taper crimp die, they work on bullets without a cannelure. If you're not getting enough neck tension, chuck your expander ball up in a drill and sand it down a few thousandths until you do.

Sierra offer the 77 grain SMK WITH a cannalure. No need to do it yourself.
Part number 1478 is a box of 50 and part number 9378 is a box of 500.

    Hey all,

I haven't see any of the 77gr SMKs w/cannelure in person, but the pics of them I've seen make it look like very shallow and prehaps a little uneven. Prehaps this is more to do with the quality of the photography then the bullet
What I was intending to do was give it a good cannelure, and see if it makes any fragmentation difference when fired into ballistic gel. Same thing for the 308.
