In order to be respected, you have to be respectable. Lying, cowardice, lack of conviction, and no moral character along with the failure to follow through with stated policy ("Red Lines" anyone?) do not garner respect from anyone. Putin isn't a lazy Obamavoter lined up for free stuff, so these traits aren't endearing qualities. Perhaps this is fine at ACORN, but certainly not for Commander in Chief.

Exactly. Hussein is a Joke, and every evil nutbag leader of every whacko nation is emboldened by his pathetic weakness.

Posturing. Like the first version of the Cold War, let them posture. The whole "save face-need respect" thing is very big in the Russian culture. They have been doing this for years, off and on.

Putin is potentially dangerous. But he's a petulant, petty, grossly self-important little shit of a man. Ignored, he'll likely fade away into obscurity. Engaged, he will probably end up trying to kick over our Lego tower.

If they sent 100 nuclear bombers into our airspace, there would be 100 nuclear bombers hitting the sea in pieces. It's sort of important on a symbolic level, but not in actuality. We should politically roll our collective eyes and keep walking.

Suppose it wasn't a training mission and suppose an un-named C-n-C who likes to hang with Hollywood celebrities just happened to be in the Hollywood home of a big movie director at a $35,000 plate fund raiser. Bear H releases a cruise missile with a nuclear warhead quite by "accident" and it flies towards Hollywood. Would the President still claim he didn't know anything about it until he read it in the New York Times?

You need to get tested for worms if you think Russia is going to nuke us for the hell of it.

LOL It's an "accident". Besides with the spineless "leadership" we have, you really think they'd want to risk their careers, rears and retirement claiming it wasn't anything more than was claimed-an accident?

Not really. We had a long period in the 90s where we weren't quite so provocative with each other. Back in the 80s sure, including things like Able Archer on our part, which almost turned out really, really bad. But for awhile the cold war cooled off dramatically. That sad part is we are starting to see the same kind of things that were common from the 50s to the 80s and that's really not cool.

The problem is right now we don't have a Kennedy or a Reagan to competently deal with posturing and keep the escalation train from running out of the station and right off the cliff. Obama is in no way suited to engage in old school cold war brinksmanship. He can't even keep his ego from causing him to step on his dick regarding conflicts in Syria.

And to make matters worse, he's playing cold war chess against somebody who is actually really good at it.
