What good could that possibly do?

That's like suggesting a child name-call another child in retaliation for name-calling.

Oh, wait ... Never mind .
Because Obama doesn't know how to play that game and would either embolden them with his incompetence, as he has up to this point, or would let his ego escalate things to a point of no return. Probably best Obama does nothing at this point.

That sad part is we are starting to see the same kind of things that were common from the 50s to the 80s and that's really not cool.
My buddy from college was an F14 pilot 'back in the day'. The mid-90s? They routinely flew close to Russia, Russian ships, etc. We still do...it just doesn't get advertised.

I think nuclear capable bombers is meant to send a slightly different message than flying fighters near your borders and navy. A couple MiGs 50 miles off the Cali coast really wouldn't be as alarming.

I can't help but to think of the appeasement leading up to both of the world wars.

I wonder how many B-52s, B-1Bs, and B-2s have routinely flown within 50 miles of Russian airspace in support of operations in Afghanistan.

Aren't the two countries about 2,000 miles away from each other?

Neither Afg or the US is 2k miles from Russia. When the USSR was still around their border to AFG was a bridge in practicality. With the curtain gone the distance is a lot further now but our astronauts land in Kazakstan which is bordered between Russia and other breakaway 'curtain' Stans.

Point taken. Still not new, still not news. Has happened, regularly, by both sides for years.
