    RIP James Garner

According to press reports, actor James Garner ("The Rockford Files") passed yesterday. His modest, self-effacing style was kind of a rarity in Hollywood. Believe he was also an infantryman during the Korean War.

I saw an interview with him on one of the shows.... years ago.... Merv Griffin or something like that. He was asked if it was true he'd been wounded in Korea and what was the nature of the wound? Garner said "well, it was in what is now North Korea and I was headed south".

    Always liked your stuff James.

    From Wikipedia:

Later, he joined the National Guard serving seven months in the United States. He then went to Korea for 14 months in the Regular Army, serving in the 5th Regimental Combat Team in the Korean War. He was wounded twice, first in the face and hand from shrapnel fire from a mortar round, and second on April 23, 1951 in the buttocks from friendly fire from U.S. fighter jets as he dove headfirst into a foxhole. Garner was awarded the Purple Heart in Korea for the first injury. For the second wound, he received a second Purple Heart (eligibility requirement: "As the result of friendly fire while actively engaging the enemy"), although Garner received the medal in 1983, 32 years after his injury. Garner was a self-described "scrounger" for his company in Korea, a role he later played in "The Great Escape" and "The Americanization of Emily".

Kinda weird. I was just reading some info and watching a clip with Garner last week, talking about his proficiency as a stunt driver. He did all his own driving during The Rockford Files and was so adept at the reverse 180 turn that folks in the industry took to calling the maneuver a "Rockford."

I certainly enjoyed his performances in both films and TV. A career and a life to be recognized.

Shrapnel to the face and he was still way better looking than me......

He will be missed. My first memories are from his Maverick series.

Does anyone remember a scene of him as Maverick being disarmed by a sheriff of ~12 pistols? I have it in my head and can't ever find it when searching... He seemed like a real good guy and I appreciated his work.

That is where I learned to do it. He was also one of Bruce Lee's celebrity students.
