Could you remove the knob and use the small nut like some do with the aimpoint mounts?

Good idea. I'm sure it could be done if one was mechanically inclined enough to not mangle things when trying it.

The knob does match the knob on a carry handle, though, and doesn't look strange in that regard.

Are we talking the LMT sight? I was literally just looking at that and came to search this site for that mod.

See.... The LMT sight's ears (I have one on one of my guns) are about 25% longer front to rear. I'd much rather buy a DD product than an LMT, but assuming the materials are equal, the LMT has 25% wider of an ear... so it'd have a certain amount of increased strength.

If I could work around that ridiculous knob, I could keep my light at 10 oclock without moving it too far back behind the knob.

You mentioned not liking the big knob on the LMTs, and that is a downside (though I think it's a great thumb rest when running an x300 in front of the FSP) but take a look at the pic below. The LMT has thicker, longer, and more robust "ears" on it than the DD.

Of course, the fail point on an LMT sight is the clamp--it is thin in the middle, and if over torqued, it will split right there. I think a way to perhaps strengthen that is to find the front steel clamping bar portion from someone's cut-off carry handle and use it to replace the aluminum part of the clamp on the LMT front sight.
Edit: Just saw this post after reading Steyrman's... I may be in business. I have carry handle front cuts in the garage.

There was a thread on this that I remember reading when I was choosing my back up sights.

    https://www.m4carbine.net/showthread...ter#post256697

I ended up using the DD front sight and a chopped carry handle, but it gave me the confidence to take the carry handle nut off. This thread suggests using a big screw driver for the nut, but I removed the nut to paint my chopped carry handle by securing it in a vise and using channel lock pliers that I wrapped in electrical tape. I suppose the same would work for the LMT.

MarkM, I am 99% certain that I have a spare LMT front sight. You are welcome to try it.

I just dug up my front half carry handle chop piece. All I need is to make a run to the hardware store to find a slim nut... trim the LMT bolt and I'll be in business.

I'm half way out of my depression

    Mark,

Went a little bit different route. This pic is of a carry handle I cut down. Haven't done the front sight thumb wheel yet so that is why I am showing you the rear sight. All I did was grind down the thumb wheel on the front & the sides. The 2 long flat surfaces make it easy to loosen/tighten.

Nice. I'll keep that in mind. Until I can beg someone to build a steel one, this will give me a little more confidence.

Maybe if you didn't dribble every firearm like a basketball on the garage floor, ya wouldn't break 'em.

Sheesh, first Pappabear's scope, now the front site!
