? on Ham Radio commo for SHTF

I have two daughters living within 50 miles of my home. Of course SHTF isn't on their radar; only swimming, soccer, baseball etc practice|meets.

Been thinking about HAM relays with hand held devices and then shot that down. If SHTF the relays could be down without power and or taken down my HLS.

Therefore what do you think about a 2 meter ban with base and 6' antenna in the attic?

Looking for recommendations|suggestions from the pro's, including hardware
