    Subsonic, expanding 300BLK penetration

There are now a few subsonic expanding 300BLK bullets on the market. G2 has a new one(the guys that make that gimmicky RIP ammo) and Lehigh defense has one.

I know there probably isnt an "FBI" spec for something like this, but would the desire to be penetration like a pistol round(12-18")? My thoughts are yes since you are dealing with pistol type speeds and the desire is to use this in a pistol like environment.

The G2 stuff appears to be brand new and the video's they have put out have it exiting 16" gel blocks, although I dont think they have much speed left and are tumbling pretty good. I dont believe their gel is real ballistics gel since its clear and I know I read somewhere that real calibrated gel will never be clear, it will always be the milky yellow color.

So, for those that know way more about this stuff than I do, would you be wanting these rounds to have max 18" penetration like a pistol bullet or would more penetration be ok?

My two concerns are hogs and home defense. I take head shots on hogs so as long as the round enters the head, opens up and drops the hog, it has done the job. The same could be said about a HD round.

By the way, Lehigh Defense has two bullets for the 300 Blackout subsonic, the 174gr controlled fracture and the 194gr Maximum Expansion. Both are excellent rounds that do the job.

I think the 12-18" penetration window applies to both rifle and pistol rounds. I would want to see tests through 4-layer denim tests before using it for HD, as 4-layer denim correlates more to real-world performance than bare gel.

G2 does a 4 layer denim test in their video(after watching it a few times, it might only be 2 layers, but hard to tell). He also does drywall, which the bullet does ok through, but when he puts the insulation in the wall cavity, he doesnt get any expansion, just a complete pass through. I think this bullet is promising, but over penetration seems to happen with every shot into the gel, but again, I dont think his gel is real calibrated gel and may be a bit soft.

This is the Lehigh expander shot by Twang-N-Bang into some gel. He is getting roughly 19" of penetration and his speeds are around 860fps. I havent seen any 4 layer denim tests with the Lehigh bullet.

I think Gemtech now offers a polymer tipped subsonic round that's effective. Don't know much about it, but I know it's in production.

I haven't dabbled into Blackout yet, but I will say I have had excellent luck with 180 gr Nosler BTs and Berger VLDs from rifle rounds at long range---ranges to the point that it's approaching subsonic. The Gemtech round looks promising

Does not expand from the reports I have read.

I ordered 150 of the Lehigh 194g expanders today. Ill do a load workup in a few weeks and try to shoot some at some water jugs as that would be about the best thing I would have.
