Got to ride in a "Huey" yesterday!

    Woot woot!

What a blast. I was at the local airshow and they had a Cobra and a Vietnam era Huey that you could get a ride in. I talked my wife into going with me on the Huey.

First time ever in a rotary wing aircraft.

It was a BLAST! I am normally scared of heights but I absolutely loved hanging out of the Huey. Our pilot even did some acrobatic moves for kicks. The high banking turns were the coolest. The nose down accelerations from stopping were cool too but I really liked the turns.

The vertical acceleration was really neat. Going up without going forwards was a new experience for me. Feeling that "thudding" in your chest from the rotors was quite neat too.

Best $150 I have ever spent. ($75 ea for me and my wife)

If they come back next year I have permission from my wife to take the Cobra ride.

You .mil guys that get to zoom around in Blackhawks and stuff get a treat. (Although I am sure that being shot at, fast roping out of them, jumping out into water or going into a hot LZ are not really that much of a treat.)

If you could only experience the joy of eating shit running off of a Chinook ramp at 0200 wearing NODs, immediately followed with getting sand blasted in the rotor wash as they take off.

In all seriousness, glad to hear you had a good time. The Huey is way before my time, but its rotors are one of the most iconic sounds in the world.

I hate how is get to read every bodies fun tales of helicopter rides. I was so excited my first time riding in a bird but Every time I have to ride on one I get pissed on by hydrolic fluid. I've come to dislike any aircraft that has rotors and "hovers". Not to mention the 5th degree burns you get when boarding or disembarking a osprey.

Now a cobra ride would be awesome!

Helicopters are cool. The comparison is like a fixed wing is like a car and a Helo is like a motorcycle.

I was at an airshow and saw the same thing and thought, "Man, that looks fun!"

    Thanks for sharing.

I got to ride in one maybe 10 years ago. They said "who wants to ride in the hell hole" aka door gunner seat. Nobody said anything so I immediately hopped in right there. Very cool experience.

Never ride in a B17 or B25. It will ruin you for life, but will be the best 300-500 bucks you will EVER spend.

The EAA generally takes their B17 around the country for rides on a tour. I highly suggest looking into it. Oh wait, I just said never ride in one. Scratch that, do it.

    Fixed it for you.

If you want the Marine Corps experience - supersize the helo and splash hydraulic fluid on yourself every few minutes during the flight.

    Glad you had fun.
