Undeniably true. And I'm not qualified to pass judgement on how this particular encounter played out.

However, I think anytime the police use deadly force and a person is killed, the events leading up to and culminating in that death warrant examination to determine if those actions were justified and how the police might possibly employ alternate techniques in similar future situations which could save lives.

All of our tactics are built upon the success, and failures, of those that have come before us.

Thank you for your comments earlier on my behalf by the way.
Hold up now, I don't think anybody should be leaving! I would like to think that all views are welcome here. I don't believe anything you said to be Anti-anything, you were just trying to understand all possible avenues of police response.

The cops should control the outcome, not the bad guys. Or, apparently in this case, a mentally ill guy with a death wish.

And, no doubt, that is not always possible in the real world. But perhaps it ought to be the goal. Police officers controlling the scene, maintaining both the public and their personal safety, and attempting to resolve any situation with the minimum amount of force necessary.

That's what a majority of them try to do, but when a suspect brings a weapon into a situation options are limited.

We have had two mental subjects armed with edged weapons killed by LEO in our area in the past 5 years. This topic was discussed in great detail by many in the community, both for and against using lethal force, and nothing has changed.

A person's mental state is not the predominant factor, the presence of the weapon takes precedence.

As that's an old vid, I have seen people dismiss it due to the fact you have one of the most dangerous people on earth with a knife doing the attacking. Short of a flame thrower at the ready from 50ft, you're in deep doo doo if Dan attacks you with a knife.
Video showing the average Joe doing the "prison yard rush" would be an effective demonstration that would drive home the point.

I think there are a lot of people in the general public, and even here, who need to watch some of the dash-cam videos out there showing police getting murdered during traffic stops. People might getting a glimpse of the kind of threats that are a potential in almost every police encounter and how quickly cops must act to avoid death.

As the details of the shooting are now coming forth contradicting so called reliable witnesses. The media now follows the same old script in order to turn the criminal into a martyr. An Associated Press article put out earlier today.

Suge Knight shot six times at Chris Brown’s VMA pre-party

According to TMZ, Suge Knight was seriously wounded after being shot six times during a VMA pre-party hosted by Chris Brown in West Hollywood early Sunday morning. Knight was rushed to an area hospital where he underwent emergency surgery. He is currently in ICU, but is expected to recover.

At least two other people are also reported to have been shot at the party. Upon arrival, police drew their guns and made attendees exit the party with their hands raised.

Knight, 49, is the co-founder of legendary hip-hop label Death Row Records, responsible for the release of albums by Dr. Dre, Tupac, Snoop Dogg, and many others. He’s also infamous for his long history of legal troubles, which led to multiple prison stints on various assault and drug-related convictions.

Ironically enough, this is not the first time Knight has been shot while attending a VMAs party. In 2005, he suffered a gun shot wound to the leg at an event hosted by Kanye West.

Update: Knight’s family has released a statement to Revolt: “The family of Suge Knight ask that you keep Suge in your prayers and to stray away from the negativity portrayed by the media. Suge is currently resting and has lost a lot of blood, he’s human. He’s done a lot of things for the community and the culture as a whole so we ask that you respect that.”
