A better comparison would be to say it's like comparing a Dakota Arms rifle to a factory made Winchester Model 70. Both will take game, but the Dakota is assembled with more attention to detail and superior fit & finish and that is reflected in the price. You can't quantify how much better the Dakota feels, but it is there

There are times when I read the threads here and it's like: I've found lost brothers...

There are also times that I read threads here and I think: Thank god I never had sisters!

I admit that I am not all that interested in the current Hodge offerings because I am very happy with my KAC Mod 1; although I am intrigued by the Hodge Mod 2 which has been alluded to.

I would however like to point out that many who espoused the need to disregard "fit and finish" should remember this thread when posting in the future. I run my guns hard and they are tools but that doesn't mean that I cannot appreciate the fine lines and that I also take care of my equipment.

I have a rule which I live by which is: never skimp on gear Particularly when your life could depend on it. I think BCM, Colt, DD, NOVESKE, & KAC are great systems. Some pricier than others but all well made. I look forward to seeing the Hodge Mod 2 in the wild and it may very well fall into the "boutique" classification but that doesn't mean it isn't worth it. Time and evaluation will tell!

But are the parts forged or cast? What is MIM with Dakota that wasn't with older Winchesters? Seem to recall something about this.

There are problems both real and perceived with any firearm. Don't get too caught up in that kind of drama over an analogy. Point being, the Hodge AR aspires to being a premium rifle. It's a better to say it's the Dakota to the Winchester than to make any car or watch comparisons- at least for me it is

    Because I said so.

    Analogies.

Specs that don't match from four different sources.

    Specs that are not released.

    Go find it yourself.

    How dare you ask.

Fit and finish are now specs and matter.

    Posturing and hand waving.

He's a great guy that needs to pay for his business.

I can't describe why, but i'm one of the people that are supposed to be in the unique position of actually being able to describe exactly why.

It could quite possibly be one of the best rifles you can buy, which is why I immediately swapped out parts.

These are not the droids you are looking for.

This thread has taught me much.

I am buying one of these guns as soon as I get the money together, which should not be long. The owner is stand up and respected by everyone in the industry and he makes a great gun. I just wish he made a 308, as I need one of those more than 5.56. When are preorders for the MOD2 available?

While these Hodge Defense rifles clearly don't appeal to everyone there is an appeal to some of us. I for one enjoy reading up on and hearing about assembly techniques that enhance the rifle, even if only on a minute level. Jim Hodge/Hodge Defense is a self-proclaimed OCD freak and agonizes over the minutiae of a rifle build (so it seems). Let’s look at an example of a “minute” detail involved in a rifle build:

Grant and others have stated that when building a rifle it is wise to avoid torqueing to the higher value of the acceptable torque range on the barrel nut and muzzle device. Does it really make a difference if you end up at 70 or 80 foot pounds on your barrel nut instead of 40 or 50? Should you even worry about how hard your torqueing the muzzle device? Is that really going to affect accuracy? Yes, it likely will on a small, nearly unperceivable level.

Now imagine a rifle builder that worries at this level about EVERY aspect of a gun. When you combine all the untold number of minute details that make rifles function easier, better, smoother, which by themselves you may never notice, you should be rewarded with a rifle that simply IS better, is more “correct” or ideal in reference to the weapons design and function. To me it is very easy to see how the attention to all those details can give a rifle a feel that……well you just can't really put in words or causes you to use analogies to convey its unnamable awesomeness.

SMGLee, thanks for bringing these rifles to our attention. I’ve seen Hodge Defense around the past year or so but honestly haven’t given them much thought. Not anymore.

In theory that may be correct. However, unless you are a moron, you cannot screw up the Geissele barrel nut. It's the USGI ones that give problems. Since there is no alignment with a MKII rail, it's nothing more than setting the wrench and torquing. I can assemble (2) Geissele type uppers in the time it takes me to get an FSB type set up and running.
