If it wasn't for France and Spain, there likely wouldn't be a United States of America. Not to say that we didn't pull ourselves up by our bootstraps or that we didn't have to actually show potential to win to get them interested... but the French and Spanish paid dearly for our independence, in terms of overseas possessions (all three paid in blood).
In any case, I think that the French people and American people have far too much in common to ever not love/hate each other. If the UK and US are cousins, the US and France are siblings... both hard-headed, one unrepentantly liberal and areligious, the other deeply conservative and pious, both believing they know what is best for each other (and every one else) and therefore bound to disagree on just about everything, while secretly admiring each other and maintaining brotherly love for one another.
Doesn't really surprise me. They're now an ally in containing China (who invaded them shortly after we left - and learned the same lesson the US and France did about attempting to occupy Vietnam) and the Vietnamese are very willing and happy to forgive past transgressions. I'd bet they even like the French, too.
I believe that the Chinese still welcome the (few remaining) veterans of the 1st American Volunteer Group "Flying Tigers" with much pomp and circumstance.I've posted this on here before, but I'll say it again about the Phillipines.
When arriving in the Phillipines several years ago, we were met with some pretty small, but harsh protests from some angry yutes. As our busses left the airport and passed all the protesters, we saw several (less than 10) old men holding up a large sign that read,
"We remember 1945. Thank you US Marines."
Memories in SE Asia must be longer than in Europe.
I would guess the UK is somewhere around 12 or 13 on "Countries that like the US the most". Their government is more than happy to get dragged into whatever conflict the US wants to get into, but the people are still sore about getting dragged into Iraq. But we're still cousins, even though we're both very patronizing and condescending to each other.

Interesting to see Greece and Turkey both hate the U.S. so much. Greece is another country that owes us (and the UK for that matter). They would have been behind the iron curtain if not for U.S. and British intervention. My guess would be the fact that while most of the Marxist terror groups in Europe, like Action Directe, Red Army Faction, etc, have largely been wiped out, a lot of their Greek counterparts have survived on and still hold a lot of sway in Greece.
When I was there in 2007, we were generally well treated, especially on the islands and outside of the cities. Around Corinth and Delphi, the people were very friendly and hospitable. Many of them said that they liked Americans because we were always eager to learn more about Greece, while most of the Europeans who came to visit tended to treat the Greeks with contempt. The cities were a bit of a different story. The people in Athens and especially in Thessaloniki were a bit impatient with us and got annoyed when we tried to speak Greek to them and (usually) butchered it. I had figured they would like the courtesy that we were attempting to use their language instead of expecting them to use ours, but I was wrong.
I couldn't tell what the Turks thought of us, but generally, we were pretty well treated. I had a guy try to sell me a t-shirt that was probably only worth 5 Euros for about 40. When I refused, he made an excuse that he had to take a phone call and had his daughter (who was about my age) take over. His daughter was one of the most beautiful women I've ever seen. I had a girlfriend who was about to become my fiancee back home (and is now my wife), and while I had to give the guy credit, I still had too much pride to roll over even for a really pretty girl. We settled on 7 Euros. So yeah, the Turks were okay to us, but they certainly liked messing with Americans.
