Not to heavy, not to light, but 100% just right.

When I'm off duty.... I'M OFF DUTY. I don't look for crap and if it finds me. I get out asap. If I have to I contact 911 and inform them I'm a off duty cop and to send units RIGHT NOW. A lot of new guys think that the badge will stop crap from happening. Me.... I know that without a radio and backup a lot of bad stuff can happen. This is to keep me above the water. Well, this and the SBR PS90 I keep near me too.
I have the exact same stocks on my 642 (Pachmayr Compac?) and while it makes it MUCH more comfortable and easier to shoot. To me, it makes it nearly as bulky as my G26 but with fewer beans and I don't shoot it as well and harder to reload. Although it is quite a bit lighter.

That was one of the reasons I am in the market for a G42. I have fondled one in the store but I haven't been able to do a direct physical and shooting comparison yet.

What caused you to go 342 over G42 if you don't mind me asking?

    Am I outside the house?
    Am I sober?
If yes to both (I almost never drink outside my house), I'm armed.

My usual off duty gun in an M&P Shield. Sometimes I'll carry my Bodyguard .380 or a Glock 19. Wallet, creds, phone, knife, and light all come along too. Spare mag is a maybe. It depends on what I'm doing, where I'm going, how I'm dressed, and what potential threats exist (that I can reasonably account for). I live away from where I work, and if off duty, I rarely go to places where I work.

It's a balancing act between the reasonable threat level, the social environment, clothing, and my need to actually do stuff that isn't always CCW friendly.
The advice above is worth exactly what you paid for it.

The S&W 342 is 11oz while the G42 is 13oz. Also I can shoot my J-Frame from my coat pocket during winter.

Not LEO here. That streamlight looks like a great little pocket light. I carry a Bodyguard 380 and 2 extra mags when I don't feel like carrying.

That is pretty similar to what I am carrying, except I carry IWB. I had a good 8 months carrying a Glock 23 or PPQ. I'm now back to my 340M&P. I'm a big fan of snubby revolvers and I have the itch to pick another one up.

ETA: Out of the one hundred cops I work with, probably less than 10 actually carry consistently off duty.
