My son is a very curious 3 about all things in life. I was about 6 when I had my first bb gun. Thing is that my family wasn't exactly big time gun people. I currently fit into the big time gun people category. I've always been a worry Nancy and safety freak. My brother on the other hand....geezus his gun safety sucks. I try to be polite about it. But the last outing I had to finally be kinda rude about it. Got the point across. Use the damn safety and pay attention. Why I bring that up is that I was dealing with weapons a lot younger than him. Now he has some shitty habits that I have to deal with.

So no matter what I'm going to have to address it earlier than I learned. Since I'm into it and my kids will be around.

On cleaning safety, gloves work. Yeah people will give you shit for wearing them. But chemicals are no joke. It not that one time exposure that gets you. It's the years of it. With kids and cleaning, that's a tough one with no right answers. Try to use good judgement I guess. Don't let them mess with solvents. Just explain that the dirty parts are bad for you especially little ones. My kid seems to be content to not touch if he knows why. But kids are different. Growing up I used to use my teeth to bite down lead sinkers while fishing.......Yeah, looking back that was pretty effing stupid.

On cleaning and gun exposure in general. Let your better judgement guide you. If it seems like a bad idea it probably is.

    This thread is funny.

"I ate lead all the time as a kid and I turned out fine, so the scare about lead poisoning must be BS."

"I have a Bushmaster that is accurate and reliable, so the negative reviews regarding Bushmaster must be BS."

The only think that would worry me is the potential for lead exposure.

I am always a bit paranoid even when I come home from the range - I shower and change before grabbing my little one.

Even if there is a .01% chance of it affecting her, not willing to risk it.

When I come home from the hospital yes; coming home from the range is a bit overreacting IMHO. This is just one of those things everyone has to decide on their own. I actually don't really deep clean any of my guns that often and most of what I do with my daughter is showing her the proper handling and sight alignment type of thing. Just having them out and describing how things work and potential dangers etc. once she is 4 we will start shooting the BB gun. It's not really related, but this made me think of my grandfather. He owns a farm and when I was as young as ten he would strap blocks on the pedals of the tractor and set me on my way. I can't imagine what some folks would say about a ten year old alone in a 100 acre field handling a 6 ton tractor with no one around, and the nearest medical facility 45 minutes away. I drank from a hose in the yard, cut, stripped, and hung tobacco, used welders and cutting torches; not to mention the chemicals on the other crops. I had a really nasty bite from a pig once, but other than that I made it ok.

For more anecdotal evidence regarding the harmful effects of long term lead exposure from firearm exposure, I refer the reader to YouTube and the "Dumb things overheard at the gun store" thread.
