That sure seems simple enough, so while I'm waiting for the Form 1 to clear I can keep using the lower with my regular length upper?

Of course.

Even after you get the stamp, you can continue to run it as a Title 1 firearm - it technically has all the same restrictions about traveling across state lines (BATFE notification), but to actually run afoul of that requires playing some stupid games in order to acquire those stupid prizes.
If you already have a lower you like, and are comfortable with having an extra $200 + engraving cost to be tied to it, that's the perfect lower. If you're happy with how it runs with another upper, run it as-is, and spend all the intervening time researching what you want to do with that particular upper.

OK, thanks guys, great advice.
I just took the plunge and bought a BCM 11.5 upper.
The fun begins.
Excellent choice!! Congrats!!
Nice choice of upper.
Big Waylon made a very detailed guide on efiling a Form 1. It's helped a lot of folks, including me. Be sure to read through it when you get ready to submit.

Great choice on the upper. I also added the A5 to a Chainsaw lower. The gun just runs and runs.
And, I just grabbed a BCM lower from Grant, and am having him put in a Geissele SSA.
I tried finding that "dummies" guide but found only the one he did for eFiling through a trust.

Visual guide How to fill out a Form 1 using EFORMS
It's even toward the top on the first page. Trusts are required to efile.

Bigwaylon's instructional thread on form 1s is golden, thanks again bigWaylon. Used it twice(29 days from submittal to approval) for my form 1s. BCM and colt 6920 lowers. The info on this forum as usual is spot on.I'm waiting on a MK 18 conversion on my 6920 upper sent to SAW(10.3) and a 11.5 BCM lw upper ,I plan on running my SDN6 and a H3 and should be good.
