Going to throw this out even though I realize how silly the knife is...

There are anti-swimmer applications to gas injection into the intended victim, I doubt that the designers had this in mind and the likely hood of an underwater knife fight is remote and very B-movie like but if the shot was nitrogen and you did find yourself in such a situation MAYBE it would do the deed upon surfacing if the stab didn't do it initally.

EDIT: Just noticed that they do mention underwater, so maybe it was a thought in the design.
