Um, no. Try walking a dismounted 4-8 hour patrol day after day wearing full Mitch/IBA/ACUs in 120 degree heat also lugging:
radio with spare batteries
spare ammo for the SAW and or M240
huge amounts of water
smoke grenades
frag grenades
maps and PLGR and or DAGR
maybe an MRE or 2
maybe an AT-4
When you get to this point every magazine worth of weight counts. Shit, when I was carrying the M-14 I only had 5 mags on me!![]()
now that's very heavy to imagine.
but what I mean was that you carry that much ammo in IRAQ coz it's a warzone.
I was just implying that in the civilized world it's not necessary to carry that much. It just limits mobility. IMHO
Another reason to have plenty of magazines is so that you can stash them to be more useable. I can grab and go with my AS bag, or I can grab my belt, or I can grab my chest rig, and I don't have to switch mags in between them. To me thats an important time saver.
I also try and figure on a 7 magazine loadout minimum per semiauto rifle I own. This gives me some of that flexibility to have them divided up.
It's your life, your family and your $$$$. Buy what you want, carry what you want, and be done with it. I think it's kind of silly to debate back and forth for 4 pages. You feel you need it or you don't, whichever is fine.
I have a chest rig w/ 3 Pmags, and 4 8rnd CMC Powermags for the 1911. I will carry one more mag in each weapon, and another AR mag on my belt, and possibly 2 more pistol mags on my belt. I have more loaded for each and ready to go.
I buy ammo when I can. I keep trying to stock up more, but I keep shooting it!![]()

I agree.
The formula in reality is unreal. You'll never make it that far or that long if you think you'll need to expend 2,000 rounds to "Get out of Dodge". It's you against the world then, and you will lose. Plus you'll never be able to move that much ammo with all the other "Essentials You Should Have" like water, family, food etc. Especially in the Winter.
IMHO....Way too much "Rambo" going on here.
