I stand behind the Springfield Loaded line as the best off the shelf 1911 package available. They are great guns, come with excellent sights and function pretty damned well out of the box. I've owned several 1911s and my springfields have stood the test of time against any other manufacturer of production 1911s.

There is no 1911 under $1000 that I would recommend to a friend or trust for carry, off the shelf, without additional tuning. Are there a few exceptions out there to be found? No doubt. But with 1911's, if you ask the SMEs, you'll find out that you cannot with reasonable probability get a reliable, duty-or-carry-quality pistol in this price range. You can buy one, and then spend a bunch to tune it. Or you can just get a better one to start with. Either way, you're well over $1k.

I would feel just fine toting a Colt around after putting a few hundred rounds down range. You can find them under 1000 and they are typically reliable without any additional work.

In my experience this is not even close to a true statement. There are plenty of Colts and SA's out there at or just under a grand and are absolutely reliable. This sounds more like 1911 myth than reality.

Sure there are lemons from time to time, however, generally speaking, those are exceptional cases.

ETA: The above is intended to speak to 5" or full size 1911's.

Do a little more research. Look up what the guys who teach the classes say about how many failures they see in all types of 1911's under high round counts and hard use, especially those that are the more mass produced variety.

Carry gun? You'll want to go with a lightened frame, a Colt's XSE LW Commander being a superb option, the pistols Colt's is sending out these days are probably the best they have ever done, they are that good! If full size is desired SA puts out a Lightweight alloy framed Government model, slide is stainless steel, two toned effect, not as nice as the Colt but not as expensive either, quite serviceable...

A 1911 needing maintenance after a while is not out of the ordinary. On some of the sub-1k guns the warranties and customer services are so good that even if you get an unreliable 1911 you can basically get tuning for free.
