My Springfield lightweight 1911 runs just fine.

That being said, I would probably not carry it. Not because I don't have confidence it will run 100%, I have every confidence it will. The problem is if you have to shoot someone, your $1000, $1500, $2000 1911 will be in the pokey for how long till the issue is resolved?

Carry a plastic gun you can replace less expensively than a 1911.

Meh. If I have to use a carry weapon to defend myself, having it sit in an evidence locker is seriously small change as far as other cost/inconvenience/bullshit stuff I'd have to deal with - planning around that only makes sense as far as needing a second handgun so that you can still have one around so the first one can be elsewhere (also for repairs/modifications/anything else that comes up). The most expensive part of what I carry around is myself and my family, the most expensive things to put back together are people - even a presentation grade Wilson is comparatively cheap, so just use the tool that makes the most sense and worry about the low probability bridges if/when they come up.

I practice what you say here (though sometimes I carry my most expensive 1911) but it also occurs to be that the last thing on my mind if I have to shoot in self defense is the price of the gun I used.

1911s need cleaning? That's news to me. I've gone over 2K of Wolf with no cleaning.

Maintenance? Not really. Toss bad mags and a new recoil spring every now 'n then.

No different than any other pistol.
They don't have to be all that clean, but I find that a few drops of oil every few hundred rounds helps a lot!

I do agree with Gunrunners point about carrying a inexpensive plastic gun.Cause I have seen first hand customized 1911 handguns awaiting adjudication cause they were used legally by a citizen to defend themselves. They are tossed around when handled by Evidence and supply people that dont appreciate guns.I have heard of one such gun being inadvertently destroyed. The Dept had to replace it however 10 years is along time to wait.

I agree. Sometimes you have to use what's available and that's just the way it goes but it would still annoy me to have say a Wilson CQB in the evidence room getting tossed around by Magilla Gorilla like it's an old Samsonite commercial. I'll avoid that if i can.

I agree as I've some experience with that happening. I have and do carry a 1911 sometimes however, I am now trying to carry $500 plastic pistols. Just saying..

We had a pursuit that ended with the driver killing himself with a .22 rifle. The investigating agency took our guys pistol for over 6 mos. to prove he did not fire a shot. At that time I carried a Wilson Protector on duty and that really made me think. It is one thing to hand over an issue gun, but another to hand over your gun, especially when not a shot was fired.
Sorry for the drift, but I moved away from the 1911 much because of what I witnessed.

Having some eperience myself if you are commited to the 1911 platform might I suggest doing what I did and do. I have a couple really nice 1911's ala Ed Brown for range work and a couple mid range Springers for carry. The browns are wonderful for range and gun games but for carry do I need a $2500 pistol......NOPE!! the Springer goes bang every time and when things go bad and the adrenalin pumps I won't miss the chainlink treatment, I won't be thinking slide to frame fit, or the 5.5lb trigger versus the 3.5 lb trigger, etc. I don't like the idea of going from a 1911 to anyone of the plethora of plastic guns, controls, grip angles and other factors, are far too different. And I'm sorry but with 40+ years of experience ( and I have shot a whole boatload and attended multiple classes and had personal 1 on 1 from a couple "MASTERS"...... will state that you cannot "master" both at the same time, you can be proficient with both but stick with one and MASTER that platform.

There's an old timers saying....beware the man with one gun he probably knows how to use it.

Two angles of looking at your handgun of choice are: 1) What would I do best with in a self defense situation? and 2) What do I love to shoot?

Your answer to those two questions could be the same gun, or not. For me Glock seems like a good tool that isn't exciting to shoot, but a 1911 joyride at the range is irresistible.

Finding a sub-$1k 1911 for carry shouldn't be a problem, if the owner is really dedicated to learning and carrying the gun in every aspect. But those lighter, higher-capacity guns will tug at you because they are quite attractive for long-term carry.

The decision of what to carry isn't always based on purely objective merits, at least it's not in my case.
