I don't see any reason to ever need a ridiculously expensive 1911 other than for eye candy at hunting camp, Ruger, Springfield, S&W, and Colt's all produce perfectly suitable 1911's for ccw work. The Ruger I handled at the range to the tune of 640 rounds of 230 gr Magtech was just as nice handling as my heavily relied upon Colt's. In fact its a splendid pistol that if absent the Ruger logos and rollmarked with Colt's and a pony would easily fetch between $900.00 and $1,000, yet my understanding is that you can land one in the vicinity of $600.00 or so! My point being that if any decent manufacturer of 1911 pistols can't get it mostly right at about that Ruger price point, then they are not a decent manufacturer in the first place, we're talking about $12.00 worth of steel here, not diamond dust. I see this all of the time, the chorus of its this or it that from the crowd that seems to think a 1911 is a death trap unless it came from one of the famous few at a price tag north of $3,000, which is just plain BS! In a traditional 1911 there are but 51 parts, and they have been around for 100 years, I have been carrying a 1911 since 1982, the only thing we ever even considered was having them throated and polished, sometimes the ejector needs tweaking, aside from that they were completely capable of going off to combat with. I cannot for the life of me think what anyone might be looking for beyond a $1,000 Colt's Rail Gun, because that piece is apple pie compared to what I was issued back in 1977, it seems to me that most of this crap is vanity, an expensive vanity that often time ends up with a pistol not remotely suitable for daily carry, let alone combat. I believe that the whole industry behind the 1911 is one of the biggest snowjobs any market has ever been subject to, consider the aforementioned Ruger 1911, a famous pistolsmith had access to exactly the same piece that I did, a pistol that performed flawlessly and without a single hiccup, its finish and machining as good as any other production line 1911 I have ever handled, yet he then went about producing a laundry list of so called "corrections" to the pistol required he said to make suitable for carry, by the time he had finished the price was almost $2400.00!

All that for a gun that was already proven to be 2" accurate at fifteen yards, and dead reliable with whatever we stuffed down its throat...

Concerning the concern about your gun being held for a few months..... So what?

Pretend that you knew that if you got in a shooting you would never get your gun back, are you really going to carry something you don't like as much just to save a few bucks?

For cops there is a slim chance this may happen, for a civilian it's so remote that it's very unreasonable

While that makes sense I think there is a middle ground that is best. I probably wouldn't carry an heirloom gun or anything that cost much more than 1 grand but I wouldn't want to carry a Hipoint either. For me that middle ground is a polymer gun because of price, performance, and weight.

If you're really concerned about having your expensive 1911 seized (and who can blame you?) buy a plastic fantastic or a Beretta or a CZ, too. You should know how to run more than just one pistol anyway. So if you do have to give up your irreplaceable 1911, you still have a gun to carry. When your 1911 gets back, send it home for a refurb or to your favorite custom 1911 smith for some TLC and an overhaul.

Ohh yeah. x 12. I've got the full size RO (9mm, yeah 9mm what of it?) and love it, honestly best/most fun shooting gun I've owned or shot (never shot Blackhawk or the like )

Unfortunately I may need to sell it to get the compact... wish I could afford both but... no such luck on the gun front.

I NEED a compact RO... don't know why but I do.

A used Springfield V10 (compact 45 with factory ported barrel) is possibly a good/great carry gun. Don't know the details on reliability but being a Springfield 1911 I'd say it's gtg.

Weight is another major factor when concerning a 1911 carry gun. Ruger lcp's or some of the other pocket sized 380's or 9mm's may be a place to look to mix up carrying a 1911, mainly when clothing simply won't hide a 1911, an LCP will likely conceal without issue. Or guns in similar profile, besides being lighter.

I carry an sti spartan 3, at least until I get a RO compact with that alloy frame to save some weight.

My sample was not very reliable, but I'm sure a good smith could rectify it. What couldn't be rectified was the insane amount of flash through the porting. Try one of these out in the dark before recommending one. Also firing from a retention position is not pleasant.

There's a big difference between a good "carry" gun, and a gun that's good to carry

For a 5" 1911 under $1000.00? From my experience, Colt. Even the 1991 series. Very high QC, reliability, accuracy and fit and finish from my experience. You can find 1991s for under $850. For the XSEs and even the occasional Combat Elite, right at $1000.00 (usually gun show pricing and cash dickering).

Just get rid of the Colt factory mags and replace them with CM or WC. I have found Colt 1911 to be great guns, but their mags junk and totally unreliable.
