Whole 30 - Similar to Paleo but stricter and only for 30 days.

I started this 21 days ago. i ate pretty healthy before this and can tell a significant difference. The food is actually really good and the only thing i miss is whisky. It makes going out to eat a pain in the ass, so I dont for the most part. It also saves money not going out, so thats cool.

There was a energy drain days 3-14, but i could still work out. I just didnt have the energy to push as hard as usually. now its not a problem.
I think eliminating all the processed crap out of the diet is overall a good thing, i am not sure how any of it could be helpful to my body.

Anyone else done this Whole 30? Liked it, hated it?

I don't have the willpower for whole 30, haha, but my wife has done it twice. From watching her experience, it was not easy, but with a lot of meal prep, she did it with zero cheating both times and she really liked it. I ended up eating a lot of the same food, since that is what she was making, and the food was good. It's definitely NOT an easy died to do, but probably one of the most effective from her experience.

There is a significant amount of meal prep. but i have found that most of it is for snacks and lunches. the dinners are pretty easy and if your good with leftovers for lunch, then just make some extra. it works pretty well at my house. I am also enjoying alot more hearty breakfast meals. It does seem very effective. i am not trying to loose weight, just get healthier and it is working!

My wife has an auto-immune disorder (Hashimoto's) and has been did this to help isolate which categories of foods were exacerbating her issues. As a diagnostic tool, I think it's was a great tool for her.

Today is day 31- and I dont want to stop! I feel great and my skin looks great. I will re-introduce foods to find out what my body does not like, but plan to mostly stick with this diet over all. I will deviate when I go out to dinner and cant control exactly what goes into the food, but other than that- its great!

I had to look this one up because I have never heard of it.

How is this different from Paleo? No grains, no dairy, no beans or peanuts, no sugars. Isn't this the same thing?

I dont know exactly what paleo entails- but from my reading in the whole 30 book it is a bit stricter. With paleo you can make pancake or desserts, etc. that have been paleo-tized. All the ingredients are "approved" so that makes the food approved. Lets use pancakes for an example. They really dont have any nutritional value and are essentially a delivery system for syrup and butter. With paleo you can create panckaes with approved ingredients and add honey or agave (i believe) and you have substitute pancakes. probably a good bit healthier, but still pancakes where you could instead eat a better, well rounded breakfast. The paleo pancakes are a crutch where as with the whole30 you dont use crutches, you try and break the reliance on these 'empty' foods. With paleo its a longer term commitment. the whole30 is a 30 day program to help identify what foods your body may not like that you didnt realize before. another difference that with whole30 you dont use any added sweetener and with paleo you can use the agave or honey (i believe).

I am researching Paleo now, seems like a decent diet to try. If there is any athletic performance increase from the diet, it would be definitely worth it. I did a Spartan race a couple of weeks ago, good fun and I will definitely be doing many more.

If you're looking for athletic performance increases...I'd look at what top athletes do.

It isn't paleo. It's well rounded diets with moderation(depending on your expenditure of calories) exercised on the parts that bring you the most calories. So eat lean meats, eat vegetables, eat fruits, eat grains, and damn near everything else including the dreaded juggernaught of obesity(the bean.) Just avoid tons of processed crap.

Too fat? Move more and eat less. Too skinny? Move more and eat more.

I'm no guru, but if there's anything I've learned from watching the world turn...is that wholesome well rounded/balanced meals never go out of style. Fads like Adkins demonization of the carrot, Paleo's weird aversion to the bean, and so forth...do go out of style. Remember when the thing was that egg yolks would grenade your heart in like three minutes? Notice that the science caught up and showed us how ridiculous that was.

Agreed. Fad diets are just that. I have heard about the Paleo diet and with all of the changes already in my life (divorce, heart surgery) I thought, why not? I eat pretty healthy already, lots of fruit and veggies, lean meats as well with a steak every now and then. Moderation is a key word that you hit upon, when a person is full, time to put food away and not leave it out on display. Not going out to eat definitely helps and I have done well in that aspect (saves money too.)
