If you're after a simplified A2 type setup, then you absolutely want the 20" in this case. It'll still do a few things slightly better than a 16", but the simple answer is that they're pretty enjoyable to shoot, for me that is a nostalgia piece, but without that they still run great. The biggest reason I've migrated to precision 16" setups is affixing a can to the front makes the longer barrels less attractive, beyond that nothing wrong with a solid simple 20" unless you're employing it while going in and out of vehicles or compact indoor spaces.

There's always the option of a long handguard over a lopro gas block. I have a 15" rail on a 16" barrel, which gets me the same sight radius as a rifle with a shorter package. You can do that with a standard FSB if you prefer that, too.

Before too long I'm probably going to put together a gun using VooDoo's rifle gassed 16.5", although I may go for their 18" instead. Either way, it'll be fairly basic - standard (F marked) FSB, Magpul handguards, iron sights only. Might try to find an A2 upper for it.

I went from an 18" barrels to 16" in my SPR.

IMO the weight savings + shifting the balance towards you outweigh the small increase in velocity you get from an 18" or 20" barrel. The likely hood that you'd be in a situation where your bullet wouldn't fragment from a 16" barrel but would have from a 20" barrel is so incredibly low that the benefits of the shorter, lighter barrel just make sense.

Pure nostalgia is why I bought a BCM 20" upper and put together his rifle. The stock is a Cav Arms A1 length with an A2 buttpad. It is a very soft shooter and I don't at all mind putting my head up a bit to use the compact ACOG. I have plenty of "serious" ARs and as a fun gun this one is hard to beat.

Really dig this. I've been toying with building a 20" variant. It's still my fav.

These are great to shoot. One of these days, I have plans to build a M16A2 clone and a M16A3 clone. I would also like to build a modern 20" AR for accuracy shooting. All in due time.
I really like your M16a4 clone a lot. What mag pouch is on your stock?

I can definitely see a similar rifle following me home some day. That looks great.

I am a fan of the 20" BCMs. Buy with confidence.

I feel strongly that 20" guns would be more popular if lightweight barrels were more common.

Agreed. An 18" melonite barrel with a lightweight profile and rifle length gas system is something I've been begging folks to build. It would sell like hotcakes because people have no idea how light they can be. My Rainier Arms mountain series gov profile 18" with rifle gas and KMR always makes people say "wow!".
