    Ebola Preparation

I am not usually an alarmist; I am a middle of the road, even keeled kinda guy.

That being said, since I was a kid, I have had a very, very real phobia of infectious disease, especially Ebola. For the first time in my life, I am have felt compelled to begin preparing for what will probably never come. It is irrational, but I simply can't take the risk. The U.S. medical infrastructure is not capable of dealing with this threat; hell, we have a national wide shortage of IV saline.

I've been buying new M40A1 Promasks with hoods, DuPont Tychem suits, butyl gloves and boot covers, plate carriers, plates, gallons upon gallons of bleach.

I have shot, moved and communicated in MOPP4 and it was the worst experience of my life probably. I want to train and practice in this more moderate loadout, but I know I would look like a lunatic.

Anyone else making any preparations for any possible pandemic? Or am I alone in this one?

Unless you're involved as a first responder, care giver or clean-up specialist your preps are sort of "over the top".

In the event of an Africa type out break, quarantines whether voluntary or forced, are the best way to allow the out break to burn itself out. You would be better served to prepare for being stuck in your home for the duration of a quarantine and the 10 days to 2 weeks it will take to reestablish supply chains.

ETA: As well as preparing for the inevitable civil unrest by folks screaming for their Venti Pumpkin Spiced Latte when they find Starbucks battista's not manning the espresso machines.

We had a few warnings come down, mostly "wear your gloves" and report contact with blood and other fluid.

Our current hospital system in the US is pretty advancedx youd be tough prrssed to catch ebola and live with it without going to hospital.

Yeah, it definitely is over the top, I admit. My wife is a medical first responder and health care provider in an ER setting.

I've got 90 days of limited rats (ranger school style) and 45-60 not as hungry.

Just ready for this all to pass.

Clorox Bleach-Free Hand Sanitizing Spray kills norovirus. This is a liquid spray hand sanitizer with 71% ethanol. It does not contain bleach. I have seen its test data from Clorox. It was tested against Feline Calicivirus and it killed 99.3%. That is pretty good since Feline Calicivirus is very resistant to alcohol. It would have probably done better if they tested against Murine Norovirus. It is not available in most stores. You can order it on amazon. I'd suggest getting the 4 pack of these little 2 ounce bottles to carry around and also the big refill bottle. I have been using this hand sanitizer myself and I really like it. Like all alcohol sanitizers, it can sting if your hands have cuts on them. I have done some experiments with it myself which you can see here. This spray works the best if you use a lot and really soak your hands and then rub. It does not work well if your hands are covered in dirt. So, wipe your hands with a wipe first if they are visibly dirty and then use the spray.

No problem. I looked into it as a curiosity, assuming that conventional "hand sanitizers" were all like an A-bomb for nasties. It was pretty interesting to find out that some are pretty ineffective at killing viruses.

Viruses are varied in what makes up their outside. Some are covered in a lipid envelope (such as ebola), others are not. Any alcohol based hand sanitizer is effective against enveloped viruses at sufficient concentration. It should also be noted that concentrated ethanol (180-200 proof) is less effective than slightly diluted ethanol. Typically 70% is the most effective ethanol/water concentration.
