I wouldn't modify the mount at all. If you can just remove the barrel and get it that way why not just do that? If you have to have a piston deal with what you need to do to clean it.

And this was my first thought...
I did go to piston for this reason. I just imagine that this setup is possible without hindering the design of the rifle.

It's not like the piston is going to need lots of maintenance in the first place, as long as it can be adjusted and cleaned from the back I see no issue.

This. I have the same mount (sort of... PWS FSC556 YHM QD.. same base diameter) on my LMT 12" upper for years now and haven't once needed to remove the piston for any reason. This is a non issue. Just go shoot the damn thing and stop making mountains out of mole hills.

We don't have mountains out here!
    Lol
Glad to hear that LMT is getting it done out west. I know, I know...just shoot it. I was being a little picky I guess.

Thanks for the good news Commander.

If you feel the need to clean your piston, then remove the FH/QD mount? It takes 20 seconds. Both would be done in a home type setting anyway wouldn't they?

That was my thought. If it was installed per YHM specs, there's not even any Rocksett/Loctite/etc to fool with. And since it's a FH instead of a brake, no timing issues to deal with.
