    Barrel threading

Hi, I have a theoretical question: I have a stepped crown on my barrel and was wondering what effect (if any) there is when I get it threaded which will remove the step ( and make it like millions of barrels without steps). I have a silencer on order and will be getting the barrel threaded on both my Rem 700's.

I don't think it makes much of a difference but I am sure that somewhere, someone has figured out that it has some affect on the bullet. I know the .22 rimfire benchresters use weights to change the barrel harmonics since they can't change powder loads. Since taking weight off of the front of the barrel will affect the harmonics, I am curious just how much of a effect it will have.

I know I am way overthinking this but I am working graveyards next 2 nights and need to stay up all night tonight.

The main point of the stepped crown or recessed crown whether it be 11 degree or whatever is to allow the outer diameter of the barrel to protect the muzzle and crown. Removing the step as long as it is down correctly should not affect accuracy as long as you have a protector or muzzle device or suppressor to prevent it from being bumped on some object.

Why would threading remove the step?

I had one where the step was pretty deep, and Clint, I think he's talking about one like it where the step is actually larger than 1/2". So when I turned it down for 1/2-28, guess what? The barrel got so close to the 16" mark that I was kinda sweating it with a tape measure. I made a rod with a set collar, put the rod down to the bolt face, set the collar, and measured it using the readout on the mill. 16.016". I told him don't take it anywhere where it's minus 60 degrees!

He didn't like it that close either so we permattached the FH.

I'm looking to do the same and had similar thoughts so don't feel bad about over analyzing this...you're not alone.

Can I ask who you had do the threading? That's the next thing on my list to determine and referrals are always more valuable than Google.

I haven't had it threaded yet. (I just had my knee replaced ) I have heard about ADCO, $140 for a barrel. I live in WA, so I am going to look here when I am feeling /getting around better.
