I don't know if it matters to you or not, but BCM is including a MOD 0 comp free with 16" uppers right now.

If using as a duty weapon, make sure you have solid zero and know 100 percent what you can do with that rifle. Practice positions and log your shots identifying the position used, etc. You have to know what you are capable of before you try something that you either haven't done or know you can't do but X % of the time. I would also include some form of PT before getting into position and taking shots(after solid prone zeroes). In my opinion since I don't know your area, the AR you describe should be a perimeter weapon and/or a team members if operating in a two man team (one bolt/one AR per team) That way you have security getting in/out of position and a close range hide option.
My other opinion is don't fantasize about 500 yard head shots, one is threat ID at that range and actually hitting.

    That's a start anyhow.

500 yards is a chip shot for a 16" barrel if you have good ammo. I think everyone who has the real estate available should master 500 yard shooting and every distance in between. It makes taking an 80 yard head shot or something a much less intimidating task.

80 yard head shot? At 80 you're in eye shot levels of accuracy

Very true. I'll pick a booger out at 80 and split it in two.

I was in the exact same situation as you are in right now. I was trying to decide if I wanted a "Recce" or a "SPR" type. I went back and forth. By defining my rifle's role, I came up with my answer. I can't define what your role is, but here was mine: I wanted as much long range ability with the .223/5.56 as I thought I would ever need or use. Notice I said ability. Accuracy most likely won't be affected between a 16" and an 18". The difference, for me, was ability and role of the rifle. The extra FPS of the 18" could give you that little bit you need on a tough wind call. It could be the difference in a hit and a center punch. In theory. I already have a MK18 style in a 10.5" barrel. I have my CQB/entry gun covered. I also have a .308 bolt gun for its role. So, for me, the 18" SPR style was my decision. I figured it was the most capable platform for my needs in the .223/5.56.

Well I ended up going with the 18 inch with a ambi and 15"kmr whole upper shipped 835 can't beat that price with bcg and comp free. Now for starters I don't know where it came from I was shooting head shots at 500 yards Hell no not even with a 308 would I feel that confident torso yes . I should have specified I am a "sniper" or whatever they want to call me doesn't make me any better yes I went to a school and train long distant shooting I don't know why that has to be a question I was just Like yes I am btw, but leo shots are average of 54 yards and more or less going to be 100 or under but I live in a rural area and I might not be able to get that close . So I want to be able to be effective at all ranges I train from 25 yards out to 1000yards with my bolt gun I just wanted the most effective precision ar I can get in my price range I don't care about the extra 2 inches being a maneuverable problem hell I carry a 13 pound bolt gun 24 inch barrel. Yes this will sometimes be a dmr spotter when Im not on the gun but mostly will be my range gun cause I haven't and hope not have to make the shot so most of my shooting will be on the range . when the upper gets here Im putting it on a bcm lower , geisselle saa-e , magpul prs stock and throwing on a 3.5-21x50 hdmr until I get the rest of the funds for a vortex 2.5-10x32 and Ill let you guys know what moa at 100 yards I'm getting with 77 grain smks if anybody interested in the same boat I am .
