Outside of a full custom 1911 from one of the major 1911 pistolsmiths, I would say there is nothing better.

This is Ken's concept for his Wilson Combat "Dream Gun"
An Armor-Tuff model for the range and a blued model for display or the BBQ.
It is a unique gun designed by a unique individual and we are extremely proud of the finished product.
Ken Hackathorn is a "prime mover" in the world of 1911's. He has been an advocate and disciple of the platform for over 40 years. His choices are a result of his background and experiences training thousands of people to shoot "old Slabsides"
The concealment grip safety and hammer are reminiscent of the first practical beavertails of 70's designed by people like Hoag and Kings that were small enough to be useful but not too big they got in the way. The one piece magwell is the same length as a standard 47D magazine so it enhances reloading without adding excess length.
The look, the feel and the sprit of the gun is all "Ken". Nice upgrades, unique look and practical touches.

I can remember a friend that had a Colt 1911 9mm about 20 years ago and he could not sell it for $300 at a gun show.
It was almost new and a lot a people would stop to look at it and then recoil in horror when they noticed it was a 9mm.
I agree...I don't get the 9mm 1911 thing. I already have a Hi-Power.
It is sort of like buying the V6 Mustang.
YMMV
Times have changed guys. 45ACP pistol sales are going down while 9mm pistol sales are going up (as a percentage of the whole). I would never have purchased a 1911 if it had to be chambered in 45ACP. Fortunately, Colt and other companies have responded to market demand.
My problem is that they aren't producing the commander I want. I would love a lightweight commander that is blued. I held the XSE the other day and it is really nice but I don't want stainless and I hate the forward serrations. Which leads me to the O1991 commander, which seems like a good gun but will need some "enhancements." Or I can scour gunbroker and find an older commander that is lightweight and blued, problem is the cost, it'll be upwards of 1500.
Anyone have any experience cerakoting stainless or putting armor tuff over stainless? It's another option, just not my first choice

Looking for a 9mm 1911? ....get a Dan Wesson Guardian, ECO, or Pointman; much better than anything made by colt, I have all 4, and the DW's are much more accurate and have a superior finish to the 9mm colt xse commander. Looking for something cheaper? Springfield Armory makes a 9mm Range Officer, which I hear is pretty sweet, no actual experience with it, but will try one out this weekend.
Still nothing with a rail though

Sic semper tyrannis.
Any reviews out there on how these things are running? My LGS has one at $710.
