Jim Sullivan / Armwest, LLC M-4 Improvement Program

I don't know if any of you have seen this, but I am definitely interested in getting more info about this. If I still lived in AZ, I'd drive to Prescott and speak to Mr. Sullivan myself, but, alas, I do not. Anybody know more?

Sullivan has to be pushing 90 by now. Cool as hell that he is sharp as a tack and STILL "into" gun design. That is one gentleman who has been blessed with a career that wasn't really a "job" per se as much as a genuine interest. Most of us schleps go through the weekly grind to pay our bills and don't give work a second thought when not there (at least I don't). This man did for a living----and apparently still does----something he enjoys. At his age he should be playing shuffleboard in a retirement community somewhere, but he's still designing weapon systems/improvements!

ETA: Googled it and he was born in 1933 so he's 81yo. Still pretty damn good though!

One thing I found very interesting was that he pointed out some have lightened the carrier and he thought that was crazy. I wonder what he would say about the success of the LMT enhanced carriers with SBRs. Or maybe I need to re-watch to understand his comment correctly.

Have to watch it, but Jim Sullivan also said this.

    http://rawstory.com/news/2007/PBS_Gu...s_in_0924.html

That AK-74 outhits the M-16 by two to one on full automatic," said Jim Sullivan, referring to the Russian-made assault rifle, now in its third generation. "And the reason there were 100 million AK's made wasn't to equip the Russian army - it was to give [to] our Third World opponents. The United States can't win ground wars anymore."

Interesting. Low-mass BCG's and low mass buffers are out. He DOUBLED the reciprocating mass of the recoil system and look what it did.

Sounds like the A5 system is definitely on the right track.

Depends, it fired from the open bolt and unless they greatly reinforced the fcg pins in the lower durability will be hindered.

Colt developed a open bolt AR the M231, but had a super beefy fcg setup.

Honestly it sounds like he basically just redid the M231. Not my pics btw, found them online.

Interesting how he seemed to speak nonchalantly about the 60 and 100 round mags, presumably SureFire made, while many including the LAV, do not consider them ready for prime time.
The videos speaks for themselves; control seems as good as that with muzzle brakes/comps, without the muzzle blast.
    Thanks ABNAK

Duly noted and thank you for the pictures. However, outside of the open bolt mode, a heavier buffer system, full weight carrier, and more linear main spring (a la the A5 system) will be of benefit for users.

I honestly do not see how they could add mugh weight to the carrier.

The basic carrier already fills up the upper channel. Only way to increase mass much more is adding weights to the hollow channel in the carrier tail. The M321 avoided this by not using, the hammer to fire the firing pin, but a sliding mass in the carrier tail.

I would have to see the internals, but all I really see is a reduced cyclic rate AR with standard lower pins that will be beat to death by catching the carrier. I just cannot believe it to be possible to double the weight of the carrier.
