Huge Star Wars geek here, and the fact they are not using anything (So they say) from Zahn's Thrawn trilogy is freaking tragic.

Which is fine, I could care less about what time these films take place, but what is concerning is the fact that they said the EU is not going to be incorporated whatsoever. Then Disney launches that "Rebels" show and now there are rumblings that they are going to use or reference things from that series, which in itself, is considered EU. The trilogy that Zahn wrote is the only EU that George Lucas said he believed fit best as the next trilogy BEFORE he filmed 1,2 and 3. Having read a ton of Star Wars novels, comics and whatever growing up in the 90's I tend to agree with him. Great villian, fantastic supporting characters, and the best progression of Luke becoming a Jedi Master. Just my 2 cents on it, I thought the trailer looked awesome FYI.

No offense, but I don't think you've been paying attention.
A-Disney/LucasFilm never said Rebels was "EU". It - and every other video game, TV show, comic book, novel, short story, and movie made going forward is going to be considered canon equal to the first three movies and the prequels and the sequels. So it's Episodes I-VI, The Clone Wars, Rebels, and every thing else set in the Star Wars universe henceforth.
B-Disney/LucasFilm never said that they weren't going to incorporate any part of the "EU". They said it was no longer considered canon at any level. Now, to be sure, the EU was never entirely canon to begin with, and frankly the entire EU had a very confusing tiered system of canon. Which would have largely been thrown out the door when they started work on VII, anyway, just as it was when they started work on the prequels. But just like the prequels, they still have the full EU catalog to pull stuff from - stuff that they like and that fits the story they want to tell. Which is what was going to happen anyway. The difference being that the fandom no longer has to try and reconcile what they will be seeing on the big screen in 2015 with the thirty-some years of semi-canon fan fic that comprise the rest of the EU.
Now, to be fair, we're still in a confused state of affairs. The Clone Wars referenced Korriban and Darth Bane and Revan, who are EU and now wholly non-canon... except for their appearances in The Clone Wars. Plus references to Dash Rendar in the "special edition" re-mastering of A New Hope. &c., &c., &c.
Point being: The Expanded Universe was never going to be used as anything more than a free idea tree by Disney and LucasFilm, as it has ever been.

That kind of stuff gives me a headache. Shall we fix it all and just do a time travel in VII, essentially do a "reboot"? Seemed to work well for Star Trek and Terminator.
Not.
Various writers want to sneak in their favorite eu into canon I think. Just read Tarkin... It's full of formerly EU and now canon stuff.

I would love to see a movie dating back to Mandalorian / Jedi Civil War with Revan, Malak, Bastilla, and the crew from Knights of the Old Republic.
That was a game worth playing! Speaking of, time to throw that in the xbox360 and catch up on some Star Wars.
