And both had large, for lack of a better term, villians. Jabba and Baron Vladimir Harkonnen. I might argue your points about the parents to some degree though. You also had kick ass side kicks/ battle buddies in Han and Gurney Halleck who both embodied the rogue image.
Of course if we want to argue that Dune and Stars has similarities then we will end up pissing off a bunch of fan boys because someone will point out that Dune came out like a decade or better before Star Wars and Star Wars is then just a rip off.
Personally, if they have similarities it likely has less to do with the being the same story, but more in that both have similar trends in developing a hero and him coming of age, leading, ect. And if anything both are ripping off stories much older than they are in that respect.
At any rate breaking down the minutia of both series really is more of a discussion for another time.
