This is another good reason to stay away from 14.5" permed barrels unless it is absolutely necessary. This is also a perfect example of why going to a "gunsmith" isn't always the right answer because many of them are not AR people and do not understand the ABC's.

I would file a claim against the owner of the gunstore because that work is nowhere near acceptable.

Exactly. I would file a suit with the local magistrate court over this one. It's too open and shut. I'd give the "hack smith" the option of buying a new barrel and set up, or I'd be filing in small claims court the same day. That's beyond a friggin' hack job. Talk about someone undeserving of a gunsmith title...

    Among other things.

Was going to make a point of that in my original post, but decided that restraint would be more prudent.

Hog wash. This is beyond "look pretty" One has a right to expect reasonable workmanship. A case could be made this isn't even functional.

I told the barrel's owner that I did not think the barrel was worth saving since it is obvious a lot of heat was used and you just cant be sure what damage has been done to the metallurgy. I did suggest perhaps cutting it down, but I would much rather see him get his money back and replacement of the parts.
    Stupid tax. He paid it.

New barrel. Anything else is more hacking.

Just thinking, in the OP it states only a barrel, flash hider, and gas block were provided... What about the barrel nut? *Was one provided &/or installed prior to the gas block being welded on?

*First time I've ever asked that kind of question.

I can't say anything that hasn't already been said about the total lack of competent gunsmith work. I would have a question to the barrel owner though.

Did he take delivery of this barrel just as the pictures that the OP has posted? (i.e. was it installed back to upper with hand guard covering it?) If he did take delivery of the barrel with this "work" showing in plain sight - WHAT WAS HE THINKING? Did he not realize this is a total JOKE of the work he asked to be performed?

I also agree with what other's have posted - NO WAY would I let it slide as lesson learned unless I felt I had to shoulder most of the responsibility since I actually saw the "work" and proceeded to make payment for it.

Why don't you cut off the gas block yourself and then send it to ADCO to chop the flash hider off along with an inch or two of barrel that is messed up, open up the gas port and pin/weld a muzzle device that's long enough to bring it to 16".

Yeah.... tent pegs. That's what I meant.
