Good question. I have some clarification on the order of operations and it makes an already bad story worse. even more so for the barrel's owner who probably should have seen the writing on the wall after seeing what was done originally.
It was the barrel nut that was left off originally, not the gas block. when the barrel owner pointed out the problem, the "smith" proceeded to cut the gas block in order to get the nut on. then welded up the gas block. The pics are of the barrel after this second operation.
Yes, and we have already covered this. Trust me, he realizes the mistake he made.
I think the main issue is the condition of the barrel temper.

Agreed, this gunstore needs to stop doing business period. To have something this bad leave your door and then to stand behind it is mystifying. And let's not forget that the barrel could be shaped into a spear to kill amphibious rodents, for uh, domestic..within city limits....

I've dropped a link on their website asking them WTF? Perhaps they will comment...
Holy bejeebus that is ugly. I can't add much that hasn't been said. The company should pony up the cost of the items, or take them to small claims court. Blow up their Facebook wall as well. Anywhere you can leave a review and/or pictures, go for it.
I have had quite a few seriously messed up barrels sent my way to be salvaged, but none as bad as this one...
The only fix would be to cut it back to 12.5" or shorter and use it as an SBR or pistol barrel.
