I do agree that the "Gunsmith" (using this term lightly) should compensate your buddy for parts and return funds paid for labor.

Regardless of if he refunded me in cash on the spot, and bought my lunch, I'd still tell everyone I knew in the area not to enlist his services for that particular job.

It's a safety issue that no respectable shop should feel comfortable letting walk out.

To the OP. Trash the barrel and all the extra and start again. As bad as that is, you don't know what was damage was to the original build parts. I would start again

    See you soon, AC.

I'd go back in and give them one last chance to make it right. If not, I would make it my mission in life to expose them on forums like these, but more importantly locally where its likely to leave a mark while protecting the consumers who might consider be inclined to go there.

Will do Kain. The owner of AAT, his "smith" and the barrels owner are meeting tomorrow evening to try and resolve this.

I do wish them good luck with that. I honestly would not let them touch anything else, and would ask for a check. I hope they get one.

That's good to hear. Would that be the "Keith W" that's listed on their site?

Anything short of replacing the entire assembly would be unacceptable. This is one of those deals where there is no compromise. The owner should take it out of the employee's check.
I hope they make this right.

Did the smith leave the barrel nut off or did your friend forget to provide it? Did your friend then okay cutting the gas block?

This cluster show sounds like it was a case of the blind leading the blind... of a cliff.

Until this update I would have said small claims, but Im starting to wonder how at fault your friend actually was for this happening. Maybe this should a learning experience for him.

Doesn't matter if he okayed it or not, IMO. A qualified gunsmith would never have suggested or gone along with such an idea.
    ETA:
I am an electrician and when discussing a job with the customer it is my duty as a professional to advise the customer if their ideas are not feasible or a bad idea. I've had to turn down jobs where the customer wanted me to do something that was a safety hazard and wouldn't listen to an alternative. My professional integrity is more important than a quick buck.
I would also question the safety of that gas block. What if those welds fail under pressure while your hand is over it? We've seen what muzzle gasses can do to a rail.
