My 20" runs with the A5H4 and Sprinco and that's the one I prefer. So assuming your port is the same or close and you are shooting good ammo then it really depends on what you want. I wouldn't focus on the ejection pattern nonsense.

Reason I ask is that I shot my new build with the standard A5 buffer that came with the kit (IIRC it weighs like 3.8oz). While it cycled fine and was ejecting to roughly 4 o'clock, there was a ring worn around the finish on the face of the buffer after the 70+ rounds I fired (all 5.56mm loads, no .223).

Yes, the standard A5H2 should be fine.

The last one I received was 5.4 oz, a little heavier than advertised.

You should recheck that weight. The A5H0 should weigh around 3.8 oz.

The ring worn into the buffer face is from sharp edges on the tail of the carrier around the buffer retainer clearance groove.

Take a stone to those edges and clean them up.

This should prevent any further wear.

I had an overgassed 5.45x39 AR once that put a ring like that on a new buffer after a short firing session, and when I increased buffer weight and put in a Sprinco heavy spring it didn't do it again on the new setup. That's why I was thinking this 20" rifle with the current A5 system might need a little help. Following IG's lead I ordered a green Sprinco spring and an A5H3 buffer (yeah he said he uses an H4 but I dropped it down one notch).

The buffer that came with the A5 kit that I bought from BCM simply says "A5" on it as far as a designation goes. No A5H0 or anything other than A5. So I assume it is a plain A5H0 (?) since it does not denote a heavier weight. I Googled VLTOR buffer weights and that's where I concluded that mine must be the one that weighs 3.8 ounces since it only says A5 on it (I don't have a postal scale).

AFAIK, the A5 buffer in the kit is only labeled "A5" and is an A5H2.

    It's an A5H2.

Do not know. It's marked C MP B and I've been told that's Colt, so I'd assume it's within spec.

So in the absence of any markings other than "A5" it's an H2. Thanks.

    Yes,

That's one of the nice things about the A5.

When you buy the standard kit, you actually get the "pro model" H2 buffer that will work for virtually everything, rather than the less expensive A5H0.

I consider the 5.4 oz buffer the ideal weight for most ARs and is not surprisingly the same weight as the original AR10 rifle buffer, which uses 6 steel weights.
