    Which optic?

I am looking to add an optic to one of my ARs. I would like to hear first person accounts and reviews of Trijicon, Aimpoint, Eotech, or other quality brands. Does not need to have magnification. If it does I would prefer 1-4. I am looking to spend no more than $400. Thanks

Thats a review I did of the leupold vxr patrol 1.25-4 optic. It gives some considerations.

I am also in the process of testing and will eventually review swfa's ss tactical 1-4x as well as a few others that are above your price requirements.

Id highly suggest getting your hands on one and see what you like and dont like.

I have a 1-4 Vortex Viper PST. They come with either capped or exposed turrets. I chose the capped since I rarely shoot at a great enough distance or small enough targets to require regular turret use with my carbine. My friend has the same scope with the turrets on more of a DMR style rifle. The turrets have positive positions and are easy to adjust, and return to zero. I don't have enough experience with higher-end glass to compare it with, but it seems to be very clear to me, and I have no problem seeing targets out at distance. The 1X is a true one power, or it's so close that I don't notice any slight magnification. The illumination works great unless you are in bright direct sunlight, then it seem to not have enough juice to show up. The center dot and ring illuminate, and works well for both close shooting, as well as going out to distance. Red dots flare pretty bad for me, and the illuminated reticle stays sharp, which is nice. We sell the 1-4 PST for $499 at the local gun shop, so you may find one used for less than that. The downsides for me are a much less forgiving eye-box than higher-end optics, and obviously less than the red dots, but it's a compromise when getting magnification. So far it's held up to being on both a bolt action .308 and a 5.56 AR, and the regular bumps and bangs that happen. I dialed the turrets around and shot some groups and the clicks seem to be accurate. Overall it's been an excellent choice for me, and I would recommend giving it a good look.

I have a few Aimpoints and a few Eotechs. I like them both. My preference for the Aimpoint PRO reflects the fact that it can be had for under $400. Definitely one of the best deals going, bang for buck.

As to magnification. There may be a 1-4x in my future some day. My eyesight isn't getting any getter. But for the time being, I'm a big fan of flip-to-side magnifiers. This G33 Eotech works great for me - I'm inclined to flip it into position at anything over 50 yards, although I have used it in courses at 25 yards and out. If I'm not using it, I can detach it and have it in my pocket in a matter of seconds. Likewise, I can move it from rifle to rifle easily with no zeroing issues.

The aimpoint pro does look good. What are your experiences with the eotech 512?
At the momebt it is between these two. I should say that I can spend up to $450.

Aimpoint PRO all the way over the 512. My choice of Eotech would be XPS at a minimum, and preferably and EXPS. I don't care for the inline models.

Vortex SPARC II for budget minded option. They can be found for a little under $200. Or as others have already mentioned the AimPoint PRO meets your $400 upper limit and is fantastic for the money.
