Winchester 45 gr JHP varmint fired from 11.5" and 16" AR pattern rifles into calibrated 10% gelatin and into uncalibrated tactical water jugs.

BB: 597.3 fps, 3.6"

11.5" barrel results:

Impact velocity: 2,994 fps
Penetration: 7.2"
Retained weight: 11.2 gr
Max expansion: N/A
Min expansion: N/A

16" barrel results:

Impact velocity: 3,218 fps
Penetration: 8.4"
Retained weight: 14.1 gr
Max expansion: N/A
Min expansion: N/A

The bullet passed fully through one jug and cracked the far wall on the second jug but no fragments were found in the third. Total water penetration 12". Lots of fragments.

There are a lot of things that will ruin your day but are totally unsuitable for defense. Take poo flinging, for example. It would ruin your whole day if I threw a hot, wet turd in your face, but I wouldn't bet on that for defense.
